DONNY AND MARIE SEPTEMBER 1999
Donny :- But our first guest was nominated for an emmy for her role as Daphne on Frasier. Please welcome Jane Leeves
[Jane enters wearing a plain black three quarter length skirt and black shirt]
Marie :- Welcome
Jane :- [to Donny] Do you remember me ?
Donny :- I do
Jane :- You do ?
Donny :- I do , it was on Throb ?
Jane :- That's Right
Donny :- We did a show together
Jane :- We did
Donny :- Years ago
Jane:- May years ago
Marie :- On throb ?
Jane :- Yes it was a show called Throb , which everyone thought because of the title it was for cable , but it wasn't it was quite a clean show , amm , it was about the record business and Donny made an appearence. .... A Wonderful appearence
Donny :- It was a James Brown theme or something
Jane :- Yes Living in America
[Both sing the first few bars of "Living in America"]
Jane :- I'll let you sing it [Laughing]
Marie :- Congratualtions on your emmy what is that five now for Frasier
Jane :- Yes
Marie :- How does it feel for the show to win 5 emmy's
Jane :- It's incredible we certianly didn't expect it this year , I mean we'd won 4 and every year after the second one we kept thinking there's no way we can win another one , and this year with all the sensational competition Larry Sanders and Sienfeld and all these great shows leaving it was just completely out of the blue and to have Dick Van Dyke present it.
Donny :- Speaking of Seinfeld you took his time slot that's gotta add a lot of pressure.
Jane :- Yes ... Yeah it's not really pressure we'll still do the same show , we still have the same writers amm , I think it's like a boost of energy for us going into that 6th season which could be a bit of a hump
Marie :- now your character has not really had a love interest.
Jane :- Well no not really , she has Niles sniffing around
Marie :- I know I love that
Donny :- I love that "sniffing around"
Jane :- yes literally sniffing
Marie :- Can we expect one now that we are moving into the new season
Jane ;- Yes ... Yes I'm told I'm going to get into a romance with ...
Donny :- With Niles ?
Jane :- No , no I'm disappointed about that as well but with his divorce atterny
Marie :- Are you kidding , that's great
Jane :- No , of course the role hasn't been cast yet but I'm going to hold auditions myself
Marie :- We have a scene from Frasier that we'd like to show everyone right now
[Cut to the bat scene from Good Grief with Daphne coming back from the store room with the torch]
Marie :- we'll be right back with Jane Leeves [cut to adverts]
[Return from break]
Marie :- we are back with Jane Leeves from Frasier . You were just recently married right ?
Jane :- I was just recently .... Well actually it's been about a year and a half now . But we only ... My husband and I only met a yeqar before we got married but I sort of knew instantly that I wanted to marry him
Marie :- I like a woman like that
Jane :- So I sort of said to him one day ; I'm going to marry you you know and he said OK but I'm supposed to suprise you and I said OK but does this mean Yes ? and he said yes it means yes , so I started planning the wedding before he'd even proposed
Maire :- I like her
Jane :- [miming] "how would Christmas be for you honey ?" [as if on phone] "Mum , set it up for Christmas"
Donny :- this is kinna a personal question and I probably shouldn't ask this but do you guys plan on having children ?
Jane :- We do , but with us only being married a short time I wanted us to have a honeymoon period and with the show and everything it's going to be a difficult thing .
Marie :- How will the show handle it ?
Jane :- I don't know , they're going to have to buy lots of big plants because that's such and open thing . i'll be carrying big trays around and standing with big cushions in frount of me because the couches are so low and it's such a big set.
Marie :- I have 6 children and I love shopping for my babies I hear you are quite the shopper
Jane :- Oh yes a bargin shopper though , my favourite store happens to be target. I just get this huge rush from going around there with my cart bying those enormous things of toilet paper for this big bargin price
Marie :- But they do they have great things there and I mean why buy this for this much when you can buy this for that much. i think acting teaches you to be tat way especially when you start out I mean every cent is important . Did you struggle
Jane :- oh yes I did , when I first came over here i got into an acting class and i met my best friend in there Faith Ford and we shared and appartment , and we sort of if I was working I'd support her and if she was working she'd support me , we'd share clothes and everything
Donny :- Do you still stay in touch with Faith , are you still very close ?
Jane :- Oh yes , very close . we're both married now
Donny :- Do your husbands get along ?
Jane :- Yes . Faith got married just ... in September , no what am I saying , June , it's September now
Donny :- So just recently. when you moved over from England did you have a problem getting used to Driving on the right side of the road ?
Jane ;- Well actually you'd think I would , but I didn't really drive in England i learnt to drive out here and Faith actually taught me and she's not the best person to be teaching anyone becasue she's driven into things like 7/11's that aren't even moving ... sort of like the blond leading the blind [laughs] Sorry Faith I love you , I love you . But I did actually drive on the wrong side of the road in my test and she was like "dear you're on the wrong side of the road2 and I said "I'm not I'm not I'm merging" So she said stay out of the freeways
Donny :- What part of the city do you drive in when you go to work , just so I can stay out of there
Jane :- I'm quite safe , but it's the 901 so stay off the 901
Marie :- So here you have this fabulous show , so what's next for you ?
Jane :- I don't know , I think I like we all do plan to stay with the show for as long as it's fun and Peri Gilpin and I have just started our own production company at Paramount so we've got the producing side of things. The name of our company will sort of iterest the british people in the auidience the studio asked us to come up with a femine name so we choose "Bristol Cities"
Marie ;- Really ?
Jane :- Which is cockney rhyming slang for a certian part of the female anatomy
Donny :- Bristol cities ? hold on nothing is coming to mind .......... oh god I've got it , I got it
Marie :- Because you are driving in Calafornia we thought a little something ... Were is it ?
Donny :- It's right here ... we got a little bumper sticker we want you to put it in the back of your car so that when people see it [holds up sticker saying "I break for Osmonds"]
Jane :- thank you so much
Donny :- And thanyou for being with us.
