Fresh from a 7-year prison term, a naive small-time hood falls in love with the prostitute he is hired to chauffeur. RELEASED IN THE USA
June 13, 1986 VIDEO/DVD A Criterion Collection DVD of MONA LISA was released in the US on March 13, 2001. This DVD includes a commentary audio track with Bob and writer/director Neil Jordan. If Pennies from Heaven and The Long Good Friday put Bob on the international acting map, Mona Lisa brought him before an even wider audience and solidified his standing as a leading man, no matter how little he may look the part. Neil Jordan tailored the character of George especially for Hoskins, and the result is one of his most touching and complex performances. A remarkable combination of innocence and street-smarts, tenderness and violence, ignorance and chivalry, George becomes a reluctant White Knight for Simone as he searches through London's seedy underworld for her missing friend. The film works well as a noirish thriller, but ultimately it is the relationship between George and Simone, both struggling to retain their humanity in a savage world, that makes this Mona Lisa unforgettable.
