The following review is from the September, 1990 issue of American Film , page 60:
John Boorman's cracked reworking of King Lear is visually marvelous. It has virtuoso passages of urban poetry, and its sophisticated trompe l'oeil effects mesmerize even when the script doesn't (and that's often). This comedy, which was savage d upon its theatrical release, has everything going for it except one thing - it's not funny, at least not verbally. With a cast that includes Dabney Coleman, Uma Thurman and Crispin Glover, it's a special sort of bad movie - maddening, dithery and yet, i n places, resplendently wacky. Touchstone Home Video, $89.95.
