CONCERT DATES

1972
David played at the Civic Arena, Pittsburg, PA, in February. We would appreciate if any of you knew the exact date.
February 20: David performed at the Philadelphia Spectrum. There was a blizzard that day and he thanked everyone for coming out in the bad weather. (Thanks to Donna on the David Cassidy chat list who was there)

1974
February 24: David performed at Eden Park, Auckland, New Zealand
February 27: David performed at the Auckland Town Hall, Auckland, New Zealand

Elton John came on
stage with David in Auckland  in 1974, Elton at the grand piano and David on his guitar.  They were both in town at the same time, and rumours at the time said David's back up
crew set it up to surprise him.

1995
February 27: Equity Fights Aids Benefit Concert , San Francisco, CA.

The April '78 edition of Tiger Beat says 3 songs from the Eagles "Long Run" album was recorded right in Shaun's house! No kidding!
They claim the band was stuck for a recording studio and wanted to rent one for 2 weeks to finish 3 songs for their album, but couldn't find one on short notice before the deadline. They heard that Shaun had a recording studio in his house and contacted him. Good old Shaun was happy to oblige and let them use his studio for the mere price of only $2000. (ouch)
Project for the week - dig out the album, listen to "Heartache Tonight" and see if I can hear the sound of Shaun counting all that scratch in the background!
Okay, maybe that was small change compared to the other big bucks he was earning for his own records and concert tours at the time, but I thought it was a neat piece of music trivia and thought you guys might enjoy it too. :)
(Thanks to Lynn G. on the Shaun Cassidy chat list, who's digging through her old Tiger Beat magazines)

DC quotes, cameos, etc:

Charles: Ehm, look. Sorry, sorry. I just, ehm, well, this is a very stupid question and..., particularly in view of our recent shopping excursion, but I just wondered, by any chance, ehm, eh, I mean obviously not because I guess I've only slept with 9 people, but-but I-I just wondered... ehh. I really feel, ehh, in short, to recap it slightly in a clearer version, eh, the words of David Cassidy in fact, eh, while he was still with the Partridge family, eh, "I think I love you," and eh, I-I just wondered by any chance you wouldn't like to... Eh... Eh... No, no, no of course not... I'm an idiot, he's not... Excellent, excellent, fantastic, eh, I was gonna say lovely to see you, sorry to disturb... Better get on...
Carrie: That was very romantic.
Charles: Well, I thought it over a lot, you know, I wanted to get it just right.
(From the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral)

In the movie Sliding Doors with Gwyneth Paltrow, about halfway thru the movie where Gwyneth's character (Helen) is sitting in a boat with the Scottish character (James), he talks about how his heart was broken when he was eight years old when his girlfriend dumped him for Gary Glitter. He then goes on to say, she had also dumped him for Donny Osmond and David Cassidy. (Thanks to Sue S. from Australia on the David Cassidy chat list for this one.)

Also during an episode of The Odd Couple, Felix is having trouble with his daughter and says to Oscar, "She loves David Cassidy more than she loves me" to which Oscar replies, "So do I." (Thanks to Sue K. from the David Cassidy chat list for this one.)

And then there was the Christmas episode of  Home Improvement, where Tim was going overboard with decorating his house as usual and was planning on adding a cardboard cutout of pear tree complete with a pic of David glued to it. (Thanks to JUne on the David Cassidy chat list.)

In Con Air when they have landed the plane to take on a mad serial killer, one guy says to Nick Cage's character "His family make the Manson family look like the Partridge Family." (Thanks to Gail UK from the David Cassidy chat list.)

TURMOILS OVER CDs AND CONCERTS

For a true David Cassidy fan, it's been hard to avoid hearing about the CDs that will not be released after all. David's solo album from 1972, "Rock Me Baby," and the Partridge Family albums "Shopping Bag" and "Crossword Puzzle" were scheduled to be released in the beginning of February, then there was a message about a two week delay. Now we hear that these CDs will not be released after all, nor will David's solo albums "Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes..." (1973) and "Cassidy Live!" (1974), or the Partridge Family album "Bulletin Board" (scheduled to be released on CD for the first time in July), or a CD with unreleased material tentatively called Gems in November, because of the contractual dispute between David Cassidy and Arista Records.

Buddha Records, who released David's first solo album and three Partridge Family albums last year, blamed David Cassidy for being the difficult part in this matter and totally unreasonable to deal with. The truth is that David Cassidy and Shirley Jones have been trying for years to purchase the whole David Cassidy and Partridge Family catalog  from Arista since they took over Bell Records in the 1970's, but to no avail. David does want his material to be released. He is not being compensated at all by Arista,  nor from Buddha, which is an affiliate of Arista. It's a no win situation at the moment. So, who is being difficult?

Buddha, blaming David for being unreasonable, caused turmoils on a chat list recently, fans saying they would boycot David's upcoming tour. Well, there are two sides to every story, and you can read David's reply underneath.

We can also add that Buddha Records took the cheap way out on the CDs they released last year, providing a really shoddy product, and also basically tried to steal some excellent remasters to save themselves some work - work they obviously didn't do once they were unsuccessful in getting some clean remasters. It is also expected that the Australian Arista release of "The Definitive Collection" (The Partridge Family) will not be released. It was scheduled to be released in January, then postponed.

Erik

And here's the letter from David:

2/27/01
Hi All:
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of my fans for their support and patience waiting for the CDs Buddha apparently promised to release. I know that some of you are disappointed about their change of heart, but please understand that this was not my decision. I would like to let you know I didn't stop the release, and it appears that my contractual dispute with Arista has affected Buddha's decision to not release these CDs. Those recordings mean very much to me, and I hope they still mean that much to you. I want them and myself to be treated with the utmost care and respect, regardless of any contractual disputes. As Buddha has never contacted me, the artist, I have no way of knowing what they had, or had not, intended to do in the future.

Now, the good news is that I am getting ready to record again, and you can expect that a CD with some new and old songs will be released in the not too distant future. I'll let you know first! In the meantime, I hope to see you at some of my concerts. I've seen the requests you've asked for from the web site, and my song list reflects some of those choices you've made. I'll be all over the country for the next year. The dates are here on the web site and will be updated as new shows are added.

Again, I love you for all of your support and hope you know how much it has meant to me in the past, and how much I need you now more than ever.

God Bless,

David

DAVID CASSIDY LIVE IN TUNICA, MS, - FEBRUARY 14, 2001

by Leah Robertson

I saw David last night at Harrah's in Tunica! He was wonderful, of course! I didn't think I'd get to go, but my wonderful husband said there was no way he'd let me pass up the opportunity. The best news is, David said he hadn't been to the South in a long time, but he plans to come back again and again and again. I talked to someone at the casino and was told they are trying to arrange for him to come back by the end of the summer. Harrah's Tunica doesn't usually have name stars; in fact, David Cassidy was the very first! The manager I talked to was very impressed by the turnout. I told him there would have been even more if they'd bothered to advertise. (There was not one single billboard. I saw two small signs in the casino itself.) He explained that they had only known for sure he was coming 2 weeks in advance, but that next time they would be sure and publicize it well.

It was so nice to get in the car and drive to see him in a familiar environment. I was fortunate to be able to fly to Vegas twice to see him, but that was such an ordeal. This seemed almost too easy.

From what I've read about the Nevada and Atlantic City concerts, this was about the same. One hour and 20 minutes. He started as David Cassidy and did some Partridge Family songs, then came back as Johnny Flamingo, and then back to himself again. He did the most adorable version of C'mon Get Happy. It was wonderful to hear PF songs done with an 8 piece brass section. You don't even get that by watching the Partridge Family!  He did Summer Days and I could just see him taking Tracy by the hand.

He didn't come out to sign autographs. VIPs got to go backstage. Gotta find out how to be a VIP by summer. LOL. I put 12 points on my Player's Card. I doubt that'll qualify.

David Cassidy Returns to Performing

ASSOCIATED PRESS/LAS VEGAS (AP) -- David Cassidy is returning to his first love - performing concerts.
Cassidy will give his first concert performance at Harrah's Tunica Mardi Gras hotel-casino in Tunica, Miss., on Feb. 14, said his publicist Jo-Ann Geffin.
"I'm thrilled and delighted I have this opportunity to perform for my fans and to have more time to spend with my wife and son," Cassidy said Wednesday from his home in Las Vegas.
Last month, Cassidy nixed his production show "At the Copa," which co-starred Sheena Easton, at the Rio hotel-casino less than a year after it debuted.
He is playing off the second year of his contract with Harrah's Entertainment Inc. by performing at least 30 concert dates at the company's 21 casinos.
The 50-year-old former teen idol and "Partridge Family" star moved to Las Vegas in 1996 to star in "EFX" at the MGM Grand. He also co-produces "The Rat Pack is Back" at the Sahara
hotel-casino.

February 8, 2001: The Las Vegas Sun wrote: Let's put posteriors in all those too-often empty showroom seats ... Needed: full-time entertainment directors and elimination of entertainment by committee, with entertainment decisions made mostly by lawyers, accountants and marketing specialists ... Why should the Rio showroom, recently vacated by David Cassidy and Sheena Easton, be without a tenant two weeks later?
Their departure was a known fact months ago ... The Rio Samba Theatre has scheduled Peter Frampton for Feb. 23 and 24, and Philip Kirkorov, March 3 and 4 thus far ... Between the two Rio showrooms, there are approximately 2,000 seats ... Ten shows a week at capacity would mean 20,000 people passing through the casino twice, going in and coming out of the show ... Do the numbers.
It costs money to maintain an empty hotel room ... It costs a lot more money to maintain an empty showroom ... Then factor in the estimated loss of income from those 20,000 people not passing through the casino twice that week. (Joe Delaney's column)

Onetime teenage idol Cassidy finds his niche

By Donnie Snow

Once the ultimate bubble-gum music star, David Cassidy left his Partridge Family polyester shirts behind and embarked on a career that has included Broadway, Beach Boys and Vegas. David Cassidy is the bubble by which to judge all bubble-gum teen sensations.
From Partridge Family cheese to Las Vegas show king, David Cassidy is still the biggest bubble in the pack.
It's been years since he sang to record-breaking crowds in the 1970s, but after taking most of the '80s off, Keith Partridge finally found his place in the world, showered in the Vegas lights.
No more ruffled shirts or plum bell bottoms for this guy, no. No more feathered bangs and shirtless magazine covers.
Cassidy, who has actually achieved much of the respect he longed for from the music industry which wouldn't return his calls at one point, is now one of the brightest stars in Las Vegas.
But then that's not a lot for a guy who once boasted a fan club larger than Elvis.
Thanks to a deal with Harrah's, Cassidy is back where he loves to be, hustling a concert tour.
So as not to disappoint fans salivating over his wealth of material, Cassidy will sing anything. Cassidy's Web site even asks which era of songs fans want to hear most.
Leaving a Broadway musical career the likes of which Debbie Gibson would covet must have been hard. Let's not forget he starred in a long-running revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and took over for Michael Crawford in the high-tech musical EFX.
That said, Cassidy does have musical merits that don't in-clude funny costumes.
He collaborated with Brian Wilson on Cruise To Harlem, Beach Boys Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnson sing back-up on David's version of I Write The Songs, which predates Barry Manilow's hit, and his recording of Get It Up For Your Love was banned on American and British radio.
Cassidy could be one hit and a decent prison sentence away from becoming an icon.

THE NEVER-ENDING STORY
LAS VEGAS EXTRAVAGANZA `EFX ALIVE' TAILORED TO THE TALENTS OF HEADLINERS

By Gary Dretzka
Tribune Staff Writer

LAS VEGAS -- At $45 million and counting, "EFX" is one of the most intricately staged and expensive theatrical productions ever mounted, but that doesn't mean it's too precious to change.
In fact, the MGM Grand extravaganza is about as elastic a show as one can imagine. Not only has it been made to fit the singular talents of a range of headliners -- Michael Crawford, David Cassidy, Tommy Tune and, now, Rick Springfield -- it also can accommodate new songs, new choreography, even a new title, "EFX Alive."
The one thing it won't ever do is travel.
Only Las Vegas is big enough to afford shows with budgets reaching such stratospheric levels as $100 million -- for "O" -- or bold enough to demand $75 to $100 a head for 90 minutes of entertainment.
Each new headliner brings something new to "EFX," and -- aside from the special effects-- no new generation of the show is exactly like its predecessors.
"This is a concept show, not a written show," said director Jerry Mitchell prior to one of the final rehearsals for the remounted show, which debuted on Jan. 30. "There's very little book to take you through the show. It's the star who takes you on a journey, and that journey remains the same.
"You have to visit Merlin, P.T. Barnum, Houdini and H.G. Wells. How you get to those four places and what you get out of it, however, can be adjusted according to the person taking you on the journey."
In the original version, launched six years ago, the actor leading the journey through a history of magic and illusion was the Effects Master, played by Michael Crawford, who was still basking in the success of "Phantom of the Opera." In later incarnations, the Effects Master -- voiced by James Earl Jones -- was a more nebulous presence, and the show played more off the impish charms of Cassidy and the tap choreography of Tune.
"David Mitchell's original ideas were brilliant, and I wanted to get back to them immediately, because the effects are as much the star of the show as the actors, and each show has been tailored to the star's talents," Mitchell said. "Rick's talents are rock 'n' roll and music, so we've been able to juice it up a bit and give it a little more contemporary feel."
Springfield's likeness on billboards and marquees above the Strip show him wearing a silk shirt, unbuttoned to his navel, and gripping one of the many guitars he plays during the show. The image is likely to pique the interest both of post-Baby Boomers and Springfield's legion of fans. Crawford, Cassidy and Tune, likewise, were able to draw from a deep reserve of loyalists, and, no one here anticipates seeing an unknown entertainer -- or one without a half-dozen fan Web sites, at least -- stepping in as Effects Master any time soon.
"They actually approached me when Michael Crawford was still the star," said Springfield before taking the stage recently. "I was involved in a television series at the time and was about to go out on tour for the `Karma' studio album. They approached me again when Tommy was the star, and it was the right time to do it.
"I liked the show the first time I saw it and thought it could be fun to do. David Cassidy picked it up a bit -- adding more energy, more rock 'n' roll to the show -- and then Tommy took it back in the direction of Broadway."
On this day, before joining the cast in rehearsal, Springfield recalled an ironic snippet of dialogue from one of his old movies.
"I said to my band, `If you keep playing like this, we'll all end up in Las Vegas,"' he says, with a broad smile. "But it's a different town now."  www.chicagotribune.com

From one generation to another: idol advice on teen pop sensations

By Nicole Brodeur
Seattle Times staff columnist

David Cassidy won't be calling me back. This is a new career low.
His publicist assures me it's nothing personal. Cassidy is on a flight to London, where he will sign a "worldwide record deal."
"I'm sorry," she says. "Maybe next time."
Next time? As if David Cassidy is on hot-demand speed dial. The "next time" may be when I'm writing his obit, mourning not so much shag-a-licious Keith Partridge but the 10-year-old me who bought his records.
I had called hoping he could tell me how it was for him back then and what tonight might be like for me: I'm taking my kid to see the Backstreet Boys.
No doubt I'll feel every minute of my 39 years, rocked by teen idolatry at the Tacoma Dome, nothing to save me but my earplugs.
But what about the Boys? Aside from the ballads and bonsai-esque facial hair, what's it like on stage for A.J., Nick, Howie D., Brian and Kevin?
"Have you tried Bobby Sherman?" a colleague suggests after the Cassidy snub.
I did. He's not even registered with the Screen Actors Guild. Nor is Davy Jones.
     But then ...
     "Hello?"
Micky Dolenz answers his own phone. I'm conversing with a Monkee.
"I still perform for screaming girls," he says. Indeed, he, Jones and Peter Tork begin rehearsals tomorrow for a Monkees Reunion Tour that opens Thursday in Florida.
"The toughest thing is to keep a distinction between the person you really are," he said, "and the person you were perceived to be."
Micky was the funny Monkee. The drummer Monkee, the Monkee who dressed in drag, the one who really could sing. But not the one you wanted to kiss.
"The funny one, the tall one, the short one, the sexy one ... whatever," Dolenz says. "You start believing your own publicity and that the world revolves around you. And that leads to all kinds of psychological, philosophical and spiritual problems."
Problems compounded by adoration, money and by the insular world in which Monkees - and now the Backstreet Boys - live.
"Thousands and thousands of little girls, screaming," Dolenz says.
He was 20, suddenly famous, on tour, on posters and on the cover of Tiger Beat.
"It's like you're in the middle of a huge natural event," he says. "It is much larger than you are."
Only on stage did it make any sense. He would pick up his drumsticks and shut off the hype.
"You're working, you're doing the job," he said. "You don't even hear the screams. All you hear is the music. And if you have a great lighting system, you don't see them, either.
"You know they're out there, but you're not necessarily aware of them."
He knows now they weren't just screaming for the Monkees. Girls screamed for Sinatra and the Beatles, too.
"It's so loud, so passionate, " he says, "because these guys represent the dream, the passion of sex and music and love. ... We're all a manifestation of that. We're their dream boy."
Waking up, for Dolenz, was hard to do. "Things run their course," he says.
He lived in England for a while, got married and had four kids. He directs independent features and some television, and works with a charity called Kids Helping Kids.
He keeps up with Jones and Tork, obviously, but it's been a long time since he spoke to Mike Nesmith, who does production work in New Mexico.
His Monkee status is no longer his day job, "But I still dip in and out whenever it is convenient."
Thanks to the "The Monkees" syndication on Nickelodeon, concert audiences span three generations. "The girls throwing panties and the women throwing Depends," Dolenz says.
It may be that way for the Backstreet Boys someday. So we should all scream a little more gently this weekend. For their sakes - and for mine.
Any last advice from a former teen idol?
"Get a good lawyer," he says.
     Hey, I'm a believer.

Buddha Records has announced the following: "The street date for the Partridge Family and Cassidy releases has been postponed indefinitely, due to a contractual situation involving David Cassidy. Buddha will immediately reschedule the releases once this situation has been resolved."
Buddha had originally announced that three more CDs from The Partridge Family and David Cassidy catalogs would be released first February 6 and then February 20. Now it looks like fans will have to wait for the Buddha releases of "Crossword Puzzle", "Rock Me Baby" (first time on CD for both of these) and "Shopping Bag". (Thanks to www.cmongethappy.com for the info)

It was previously announced on the Buddha Records website that we had plans to continue with
reissues of the Partridge Family and David Cassidy catalog. There have been some unforeseen impediments which prevent us from currently proceeding with the roll-out of this series. Our immediate goal was to follow up our successful Partridge Family and David Cassidy reissues from last year with the Partridge Family's "Crossword Puzzle" and "Shopping Bag" as well as David Cassidy's
"Rock Me Baby".  We're hopeful that these classic titles will be available for release soon at which point you can expect to see them getting the full Buddha treatment (digital remastering, detailed liner notes, rare photos and memorabilia, etc...).  Thank you for your patience. Buddha Records.

Message from Ruth at DavidCassidy.com: It is with great regret that we forward this email from Carebar. Thank you for your efforts to support it:

Dear nonprofit administrator,
It is my displeasure to announce that the Carebar program has been unable to procure additional funding.
The lack of actual Carebar usage on the part of the end-users has resulted in Carebar paying nonprofits at an inflated rate that reflected the projected earnings rather than funds actually earned. The amounts earned were much lower than originally projected, even at our lowest estimates. This resulted in CoPort paying nonprofits from it own funding source. Without sustainable income received from actual Carebar usage, in addition to the current â*odot.comâ* environment, our company has declared bankruptcy and unfortunately cannot fulfill the obligations to our nonprofit partners. Finally, please do not hold any Carebar staff members responsible for the current situation, as we have been working as volunteers without pay since the end of October to try to find a positive resolution. It appears that a merger with another e-philanthropy company is unlikely, and that additional revenue sources will not arrive.
Our deepest apologies to you and your organization.
Sincerely,
Ex-Carebar staff
