Pathetic Caverns REVIEW

Carolyn Wonderland & the Imperial Monkeys, Play With Matches (Big Mo, 1995) Produced by the band, with Ed Eastridge and Mitch Collins.

I dunno if the smoking guitar solos are by lead signer Carolyn or by the other guitar player, Eric Dane, but they're what make this solid blues-rock effort a cut above the average -- very nice melodic sense. The first track, "Quintana" is especially strong. And I'm not saying that just cause I used to live on Quintana street, neither, though that might have had something to do with my deciding to buy it to start with. ;-) On the other hand, the closing number, the i-hope-it's-tongue-in-cheek drunk-driving/sex anthem "No Really, I Can Drive" is a mis-step. (And I sure hope they don't close bar sets with that number!) About half the tunes were written by one K. Blanchet, who ain't in the band.
