Heavy Metal: FAKK2 is a visually stunning single-player game that
uses Quake 3 Arena technology. Although the graphics are beautiful,
some of the gameplay is lacking. While combat is enjoyable using
a large selection of melee weapons and firearms in both hands (and
lots of gibs and spraying blood), some of the puzzles are not fun
because they are either boring and tedious or totally frustrating.
The flying insect enemies are a nuisance. Some 3D action games have
too much platform jumping (see screenshot
17) - I think it's time that games evolved beyond Super
Mario Bros.!
I enjoyed fighting the Soul Harvesters and the swamp monsters that
have jaws for hands. There are plenty of cinematic cut-scenes mixed
in with the action, adding to the story and usually providing some
comic relief. Julie Strain (the heroine) makes several costume changes
throughout the game to satisfy all the drooling guys.
Heavy Metal Arena and CTF multiplayer mods are in development, which
may increase the lifespan of this game.
FAKK2 seems to be yet another game that was released before it
was finished - the .pk3 files are full of files (sound samples etc.)
that you don't see/hear in the game, and after completing the adventure
you feel ripped off, as if the game is only half over.
I want to have a Julie Strain vs. Lara Croft deathmatch!
