The diamond engagement ring given by King Olav V to his bride Martha, and later passed to King Harald for his bride, Sonja, will be passed on again. Norway's handsome Crown Prince, Haakon Magnus, has become engaged.
The wedding--set for August 25, 2001--will be the Norway's first Royal wedding since his parents, King Harald and Queen Sonja, married in 1968.
Haakon may've first come to many people's attention at the 1994 Olympics, as he was the final torch-bearer. [ Remember? This was also the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan Lillehammer games. After winning Silver, Kerrigan had swiftly exited Norway, claiming: "The King of that country asked me to leave," allegedly citing security reasons. King Harald denied this. Likely, Kerrigan mistook some other official for him, ensuring no invite for HER at this wedding! ]
Prince Haakon's fianceé is Mette-Marit Tjessem Hoiby, who was revealed as his love-interest publicly last May. Last September, Haakon created controversy by taking a flat with her, becoming the first Crown Prince to openly live with his girfriend ( if you don't count Prince Charles and Camilla; and for some odd reason, Hello! magazine did not ). The Prince's parents supported him, as did also most of the country. Some Royal watchers had worried over this, as Mette-Marit is an unwed mother of a 3-year-old son ( Maurius ); and his father had been convicted of a drug charge. But since this is a modern era, and this boy cannot become King ( as only biological offspring are eligible ), most people support and respect Prince Haakon's True Princely love for his Princess-to-be.
