Day Petition Reaches Magic Number

WINNIPEG - A spoof campaign to have Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day change his name to Doris has ballooned on the Internet.

Up to 400,000 people have signed the electronic petition started by the CBC comedy-satire television show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

Producers of the show came up with the idea as a way to poke fun at an Alliance policy to hold a national referendum on an issue if three percent of voters signed a petition.

Comedian Rick Mercer says the number of people who have signed the show's petition means that 'magic number' of three percent has now been reached.

Doris Day was one of Hollywood's biggest film stars in the 1950's and 60's, best known for her wholesome good looks, comedic charm and singing talent.
