Rick Mercer, Host of the 2001 Juno Awards
Guy: "Now, we have more announcements to make: First of all, the host for the 2001 Juno Awards is one-fourth of This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Rick Mercer... will be the host this year. [Applause] Rick is in the middle of taping shows as we speak, but he did send us this video greeting..."
Rick: "Now...? Now...? Hi, I'm Rick Mercer. I'm sorry I can't be with you today, but I'm honored to be hosting the 30th annual Juno Awards. In fact, it's a great honor just to be holding a Juno Award. It represents all the wonderful acheivements of the Canadian music industry, but also reminds me of buying duty-free perfume at the airport. You know, the ones in the really big bottles.
"It's been a really great year for Canadian music; as a result it's gonna be a really great show. On a personal note, I'm also excited about being reunited with my brothers, the Moffatts. When I was in the band I was known as Blotchy Moffatt. I outgrew the combo, and Dad sold me on the internet. But that's behind me now, and it will be fun to be together again. And of course I'm looking forward to meeting Bruce Colburn. I'm a huge fan of his because he's a folkie, and he hunts, and he shoots ducks, and I like that, 'cause that's Canadian.
"And so I'll see you at the big show at Copps Coliseum. Unless, of course, the judge honors Nelly Furtado's restraining order, in which case I'll be hosting via sattelite. But I have my fingers crossed. See you in Hamilton!"
Guy: [Applause] "...very funny guy. Very funny guy."
