INTRO
Growing up, every little girl wishes for the day when her dream's come true. The dream of becoming a new pop group came true for four beautiful young girls when they were introduced to Sean "Puffy" Combs. The foursome performed at a private showcase at the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Bad Boy CEO was so impressed, "he signed us on the spot," says the ultra perky Melissa.
Dream is the brainchild of 2620 Management. The Los Angeles based management firm held auditions in search of a Dream. The result was Ashley, Melissa and Holly. With a little more searching they found the missing link in their own back yard, Holly's best friend Diana. "The idea of having a pop group on Bad Boy Records is so oh my gosh," says Holly. "People are gonna check just because."
THE GIRLS
The girls maintain individual style and character that combined are the perfect ingredients for the next pop sensation. Ashley with her urban chic vibe and obvious confidence reigns from Blythe, California. Ashley found out about the Dream audition after calling a 1 800 new talent search number. To her dismay 10 other hopefuls performed her song of choice, Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On," but Ashley's edgy style and vocal ability prevailed, management knew she shared the Dream.
Holly is the emotional rebel who can paint a picture with her voice. The North Hollywood native began acting at the tender age of eight and spent most of her youth performing in musical theater. When Holly reached the eighth grade, she knew that she wanted to concentrate solely on her singing career. Holly attended the Dream audition at the recommendation of her vocal coach and was signed shortly after.
Diana possesses a soft-spoken strength and an angelic voice. The youngest of four girls, Diana is a native of the San Fernando Valley. She is the last member to join the Dream team even though she always knew she wanted to be a performer.
Melissa is a warm blonde with great sense of humor and a bright positive outlook on life. A native of San Clemente, California, Melissa is the eldest of five girls. Melissa entered the Dream audition at the direction of her singing coach, and although she felt overwhelmed by the number of girls competing for the group, she was able to display her true talent and made out with flying colors.
THE ALBUM
Dream's debut, It Was All A Dream, due for a January 2001 release, is Puff Daddy's version of "New Pop America". The album is a mellifluous fusion of pop, hip-hop, dance and R&B. Dream worked with eclectic producers including Guy Roach, Mario Winans, Todd Chapman and Sean "Puffy" Combs to create an edgy, radio-friendly sound that heralds the emergence of an exciting new phenomenon. The Southern California-bred cuties command each song with their ethereal vocal styling and unapologetic attitudes. The first single "He Loves U Not, " produced by Steve Kipner and ex System member David Frank (who also produced Christina Aguilera's "Genie In A Bottle") bangs with a bouncy, synth-heavy rhythm and oozes with sassy lyrics: "You can pout your cherry lips/ Try to tempt him with a sweet kiss/ You can flirt your pretty eyes/ He ain't got his hands tied/ No matter what you do/ He's never gonna be with you/ He's into what he's got/ He loves me/ He loves you not."
A little dance/rock flavor is thrown into the mix with "Baby," while "Pain," produced by Dream's manager Kenny Burns, goes the hip-hop route. Ashley even showcases her burgeoning rhyme skills on the song: "Sup with you?" Dream's favorite and perhaps most poignant song is "When I Get There," an inspirational ballad that promotes hope over a soft, liquid melody. The Puffy-produced "Angel Inside," is a fast-paced love story and "Daddy's Little Girl" is a moving ode to the girls' fathers. Dream even offer their femme spin on the New Edition classic, "Mr. Telephone Man."
Dream will electrify the fans with their skilled harmonies and fiery dance moves. "When it comes to Dream, " says Diana, "there's nothing to compare." Ashley adds, "Dream has no limits. We're gonna attack every angle of performing there is." And for Holly, although it's gonna be a alot of fun, "it's not about the fame, it's about the music. Maybe we can push people to pursue their goals."
With Dream, Bad Boy will make a definitive mark on the world of teen pop. They hope to transcend cultures and be able to play on all platforms. And as Melissa, Diana, Holly and Ashley prepare for their exciting rendezvous with destiny, the world waits with acute anticipation. With Puff Daddy at the helm, the girls are destined for a Dream come true.
