Homer Wells is an orphan in remote St. Cloud, Maine, in the 1930's. In his childhood, Homer has been adopted twice. However, he was returned to the orphanage shortly after he has been adopted. As time passes, he has become the favourite orphan of the orphanage director, Dr. Larch, who imparts his full medical knowledge on Homer. Because of his training, Homer becomes a skilled, albeit unlicensed, physician, but he yearns for a self-chosen life outside the orphanage. |

One day, a pregnant woman known as Candy and her boy friend Wally visit the orphanage for an abortion performed by Dr Larch. After the doctor has conducted the medically safe, albeit illegal, abortion to Candy, Homer determines to leave with the young couple and works on Wally's family apple farm. Wally then goes off to war, leaving Homer and Candy alone together. What will Homer learn about life and love in the apple business? How about the destiny that Dr. Larch has planned for him? |
