Vanessa Carlton

At the VH-1 Big in 2002 Awards, the one for Most Ubiquitous Song went, blessedly, to "A Thousand Miles," a mixture of string quartet and Bruce Hornsby-type piano that was one of the few songs played regularly over the radio in '02 that didn't wear out its welcome. Despite a name that calls up visions of a grating Barbapapa lookalike and a much-hated ITV franchise holder, the lovely and talented Vanessa Carlton is by some way the most appealing (visually and musically) of what the media dubbed "the anti-Britneys," though by dint of her not being an obnoxious overhyped little snotrag she's been overshadowed by Pink and Avril Lavigne (and may they both get terminal thrush). Life sucks. She doesn't.

Recommended viewing: VH-1, MTV and other music shows, in case the sloe-eyed, yearning maiden shows up.
