A firm hand griped Merry's shoulder and he turned his head, wiping away the tears from his eyes. Sam was behind him, urging him up. Merry batted at his hand.

"Please, I just want to be left alone," Merry groaned, sniffling.

"Come back, now," Sam firmly said. "Something unimaginable has happened."

Merry glared up at him in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"Pippin, he's- awake," Sam murmured. "I don't know how, but- "

Merry didn't wait for Sam to finish. He was bolting back toward the hobbit hole as fast as his legs could carry him. The ground was slippery, but he managed to keep his balance and rushed through the door, heading straight to the bedroom. His only focus was on the bed, where he saw his beloved sitting upright, gazing about in a daze. Sweat was sliding down his brow, and he was trembling violently, but his skin had returned to its normal color and he seemed more energetic.

"Merr- Merry?" Pippin squeaked.

The hobbit lunged for the bed and buried his face into Pippin's shoulder, kissing along the other's collarbone, quickly moving up to his face.

"Merry," Pippin protested, gently pushing at his cousin. For a moment, he was kept silent by persistent kisses before he was able to nudge Merry aside. "What's wrong? You act as if I died."

"You did!" Merry cried, weeping. "I thought I lost you forever, Pippin! I don't understand! I thought you- "

Pippin bit his lip, thinking hard. "All I did was pass out, I think. I mean, the last I remember was you hovering over me, and I was in great pain. I couldn't breathe, and the darkness came over me. I was so scared, but then I heard this voice. It sounded....similar to Gandalf's, but I couldn't really make out what he was saying. Then, I was awake again. Brombleburr screamed when he saw me and almost jumped to the ceiling. I don't understand why." He smiled coyly at Merry. "You really thought I was dead? You silly Brandybuck!"

Merry laughed and buried his face in his cousin's curls, savoring the ginger smell that flooded his senses and the soft texture that tickled his nose and cheeks. Brombleburr looked on in shock as Sam entered the room, soaking wet from the rain.

"How? He was....I'm so sure of it....I could have sworn...." Brombleburr muttered.

Sam grasped his shoulders and led him out. "I know. I don't quite get it myself, but just let it go for now. Someone was watchin' over him."

Pipping snickered. "What are they talking about?"

"Never mind," Merry sighed. "Tell me, do you still have pain?"

"Hm, just a little sore, but not as bad as it was," Pippin answered.

"Good," Merry murmured, gently kissing one of the welts on Pippin's cheek. "Don't ever do that to me again, my beautiful Took."

"Do what?" Pippin questioned, pouting. "I don't know what you're prattling on about. Did I do something wrong?"

"No, no," Merry whispered. "I will tell you some other time."

Pippin turned his gaze to the sheets. "How can you find me beautiful? I'm an ugly mess. I'm covered with bruises."

"Don't say that, love," Merry growled. "Bruises or no, you're still the most pretty hobbit of the Shire. If you weren't recovering, I'd ravish you."

Pippin giggled shyly, drawing Merry closer. "I'm really not that weak, Merry." His palm ran down Merry's chest, which was instantly seized and brought up to the other's lips, receiving a delicate kiss.

"Don't tempt me, my little imp," Merry chuckled. He nipped at the other's nose, creating another giggle. Merry frowned, and his gaze became stern. "You still have to tell me who did this to you, specifically."

The color drained from Pippin's face and his eyes started to weld. "Please, not tonight Merry."

"You have to tell me sometime, Pippin," Merry pushed.

Pippin sobbed, "They were just robbers, three of them, traveling in the Shire. When I was going down the path they ambushed me, beat me, and took my belongings. There's nothing more."

"Nothing more?" Merry asked, raising an eyebrow.

The man's voice still lingered in Pippin's mind; the man's vow. He shook his head, though. He didn't want to tell Merry. What difference would it make anyway? He thought the chances of running into the men again was slim.

"No, nothing more," Pippin replied, faking a smile.

"I have a feeling you're not telling me something," Merry growled, "but I won't push you anymore tonight. This isn't over yet. There's more I want to know."

"Please, I don't want to talk anymore about it," Pippin murmured, nuzzling into the other's shoulder while tugging at his shirt.

"What are you doing?" Merry asked, his voice hitching.

"You're all wet, Merry, and you'll catch your death of cold if I don't get you out of these," Pippin chirped.

"My, you sure gained a lot of strength back," Merry said. "I can hardly believe it. However, I think I should be the one to remove them, elsewhere. You should be resting. You have gone through a dreadful ordeal."

"I know, but I feel so much better," Pippin protested. "I don't want you leaving my side. I was so frightened when you left, Merry. Please, don't leave me again."

"I promise," Merry replied, kissing Pippin lightly. "I'm not leaving you."

"Then stay with me tonight, here, in this bed," Pippin smirked. "I'm becoming cold, Merry. Keep me warm on this chilly night? Please?"

Merry groaned, "Oi, you have a way with words." The younger hobbit sneered and began to undo the buttons. "Pip, I won't allow anything to happen, not tonight at least. Even if you do feel better, you're still injured, and you need to sleep."

Pippin pouted, "But I really do feel better, Merry. Besides, you should know by now that you can't resist me."

"Ah, a challenge eh?" Merry snickered. "We'll see Pippin." He grasped the other's hands, pushing them down. "I must talk to Sam and Brombleburr first." He raised a finger to Pippin's lips when he tried to speak. "I swear that I'll be right back. In the mean time, you just curl up and try to sleep. I'll be back in no time."

Pippin grumbled, but slid back under the covers and watched as Merry left. Some time later, Merry slipped back into the room, undoing the soaking the clothes. A smile grew on his face as he watched his cousin's sleeping form. He looked peaceful under the quilts, grinning faintly and murmuring under his breath, appearing almost angelic despite the black and blue marks radiating from the fire light. The hobbit slid under the covers, wrapping his arms around Pippin. The other hobbit groaned and slowly woke, smiling wide at the sight of Merry.

"Glad you're back," Pippin whispered.

"I hope you weren't freezing due to my absence," Merry teased.

"No, but I feel so much warmer and safer now that you're here," Pippin said.

Merry lowered his head, gently rubbing his lips across Pippin's. The other hobbit groaned, pressing harder with need and darting out his pink tongue give Merry a teasing lick. Merry shuddered, opening his mouth and let Pippin's tongue slid in. Pippin whimpered under the kiss, and tugged at the older hobbit.

Merry shook his head, but allowed himself to be pulled on top, propping his elbows on both sides to keep from pressing his weight on Pippin's chest. Before he could pull away, Pippin securely wrapped his legs around the other's waist, pulling him in closer.

"Pip, no, I'll hurt you," Merry said sternly. "Your ribs...."

"Are fine enough," Pippin interrupted, slowly thrusting his pelvis against Merry's. The older hobbit bit his lip and stifled a groan. "Please....I need you....now."

"Oh...Pippin," Merry playfully snarled. "Why do I always let you win?"

"As I said, dearest Merry," Pippin moaned, increasing the friction, "you can't resist me."

"I suppose I can't," Merry answered, grinding hard, making Pippin whimper louder.

Pippin raised his head, nibbling under Merry's ear, making the other tremble. The younger hobbit winced in pain as Merry bounced his chest off of Pippin's bruised chest. He didn't know why, but movement made him flash back to the grove and he saw Haridur hovering over him; leering at him with those dark eyes. He knew the man's intent and was thankful he never went through with it. There was still a threat, though Pippin didn't want to admit it. It was easy to see that man coming after him, f ulfilling his dark wishes.

"Merry!" Pippin cried, suddenly breaking out in tears.

Merry sat up, hauling the other in his lap, rocking him gently. "I'm sorry! I hurt you, didn't I? My poor Pip! Forgive me! I never meant- "

"No, it's not that," Pippin choked. "I just- just hold me tight! Hold me tight!" He desperately grabbed at Merry, wanting to replace the image of the awful man with his beloved. "I don't want you to let go! Please, just hold me!"

"I am, my dear one, I am," Merry soothed. "Maybe we should stop."

"No!" Pippin snapped. "I never said I wanted to stop!" He shoved Merry down on his back, making the other gasp in shock at the abrupt action. Pippin laid on top, kissing wet trails down the other's chest. "I want to finish what we started."

"I should be tending to you," Merry murmured, reaching for Pippin, yanking him back up for a bruising kiss. He lifted his legs, allowing Pippin to fall in between. Gradually, he began the rocking motion, driving both of them wild. "Do you like that Pip?"

"Very much," Pippin squeaked, making Merry chuckle.

Outside the window, the rain had ceased and the clouds dissipated, leaving a sky shimmering of stars and moonlight. The fire inside the hobbit hole died down, and in the shadows two forms could be seen tucked together, resting peacefully.

To be continued.
