Thrills and Spells… Monday morning around the breakfast table. “Is Peter up yet?” Ray asked. “Do you need to ask!” Winston chuckled. “No, silly question really!” he laughed back. “Mornin’ Egon” Ray greeted his blond colleague. “Good morning, have you guys seen Janine?” “She isn’t here yet” Egon asked, looking puzzled. “Oh… no, sorry, I just put it down to the usual New York traffic jams” Winston replied. Ray shook his head in agreement. “Hmmm strange…” Egon muttered and wandered downstairs to the garage and continued reading the latest issue of “Fungi Journal” from Peter’s desk, knowing he’d be the first to know when she arrived. As it happened their red-haired secretary stepped through the front door only seconds later. Egon stood up and greeted her warmly. “Sorry I’m so late, but I spotted something in a shop window that I just fell in love with and then the traffic held me up” Janine apologised, sincerely. She put her bag down and sat at her desk. Egon accepted the apology and was just about to go back to his lab when Janine placed the ‘cause’ of her late arrival on her desk. “Is that what you bought?” he asked, rather bemused by the peculiar looking object. She removed the bubble wrapping and a carved black Soapstone sculpture was revealed. “Yes, it’s an African tribal talisman, supposed to make reluctant lovers more ‘enthusiastic’” she laughed and smiled suggestively. “At least that’s what the women who carve them originally intended them to do.” “They just make them for curio’s nowadays!” Janine reassured a now worried looking Egon. He winced and went back to his lab before anything could happen!! She placed it on her desk and went about her work. Nothing unusual happened until Slimer accidentally dropped a small glob of Ectoplasm on it, causing Janine a great deal of grief! “Slimer will you please be more careful!” she chastised, wiping off the gooey mess. “Awww, soorryy Jannninnee!” he pleaded.
The day passed without incident, until Janine went home. As the night began to close in the object began to emit a strange pale greenish glow. However the effect only worked on those who the keeper of the object regarded with close affection. “Hey guys, will you come here!” Peter shouted, noticing the glow coming from behind his filing cabinets. “What’s up Pete?” Ray asked. “OH!” “Wasn’t that the curio Janine bought this morning?” he asked. “Yeah…” Winston said leaning forward for a closer look. “DON’T TOUCH IT!” Egon shouted as he ran down the stairs. “She said it was an African talisman to make…” He was cut off mid sentence as the presence of all four of them made the object ‘awaken’ in full force. Suddenly the object emitted a brilliant flash of white light, which engulfed them. “What happened?” Peter asked. “I don’t know, I don’t even remember why I came down here in the first place!” Egon huffed and went back to his lab. “Strange nor do I!” Ray chuckled. “Same here!” Peter and Winston added together. They all went back to their past-times, none the wiser. The next morning when Janine arrived, slightly earlier than normal to make up for her lateness the previous day, she was curious and rather exasperated to find Peter sitting in her chair with his feet - clad in his hefty boots - on her desk. “Mornin’ Janine” he said with more than a hint of suggestiveness in his voice. She glared at him and he got up, held the chair for her and sat on the corner of her desk smiling boyishly. “Peter, will you please let me get on with my work, I’ve got things to do!” she said, assertively. “Sure” he replied and went back to his desk. ‘That’s strange, he never lets me off that easily!’ she thought to herself. ‘Oh well, better make the most of it!’ The morning passed fairly quietly, until they got an urgent call to a School on the far side of the city. She handed the details to Egon who actually smiled at her!! Even Ray and Winston had rather abnormal grins on their faces. “See ya later hon…” Peter whispered as he walked past. She glared at him, but he didn’t take any notice, he had that ‘besotted’ look about him, which usually indicated he was due out on a date. However he hadn’t been fortunate enough to get any acceptances lately. In fact it had been several weeks. “This is getting too weird!” she said to herself after they’d gone. She put Peter’s behaviour down to his lack of a date and activating the answer-phone, she wandered upstairs to ‘powder her nose’. On the way back she passed the lounge and spotted a piece of paper on the coffee table with a peculiar picture on it. She picked it up and was nearly jolted out of her skin by what she saw!! Someone had drawn a rather suggestive picture of her!! ‘What a darlin’!’ had been scrawled underneath. Judging by the handwriting she concluded that Ray, of all people, had created this rather over the top item of flattery! “Well I never!” she shouted out loud. Slimer overheard her and came in to investigate. “He! He! Ray say you got nice legs!” he burbled. “Winston say you got nice…” Janine slapped her hand over Slimer’s mouth. “Don’t even go there!” she scolded. “Whatever could’ve got into them?” “They’ve never done anything like this before?!” she added, utterly confused. After a moment she found herself feeling more curious than angry. “And what did Egon say about me Slimer?” she asked, innocently. Slimer, being his usual honest self couldn’t help revealing his comment either, “Egon say he like your shapely figure.” Suddenly she was overcome with embarrassment. “Really, did he really say that?” Slimer nodded, sending globs of slime in all directions. Janine ducked and managed to avoid being hit. She wandered back downstairs in a dream. It took her ten minutes to regain her composure before she dare take the answer-phone off and resume her job!! In the midst of her dreamy thoughts of Egon she looked at her new ornament and suddenly the ‘penny dropped’. “Oh my god, of course!!!” “Whatever shall I do?!” “I didn’t believe these things actually worked!!!” Frantically searching for an answer she decided to take the talisman home, in the hope that the distance between her apartment and the Firehouse might make the ‘spell’ wear off.
The bust at the School took longer than expected and Janine had gone home when they got back. “Oh no she’s gone!” Peter moaned. “Yeah, well, it’s well past five Pete” Winston replied. “Pity” Ray added. “Hmmm” Egon whispered under his breath. All during their evening meal the conversation was littered with either direct references to Janine or to certain aspects of her anatomy or clothing. Had she been a ‘fly on the wall’ her stomach would have turned in both disgust and down right embarrassing flattery. When they all finally settled down to sleep their heads were still filled with thoughts of their attractive secretary, though none of them knew why and they didn’t want to know. It was enough to know that they liked her, a LOT!
Early the next morning Ray was the first to get up. He wandered downstairs and started preparing the breakfast table. Suddenly a thought occurred to him. ‘What happens if we all try to ask Janine out?’ He began to realise that he had some serious competition, especially from Egon and Peter! Peter had always been the ‘ladies man’ and was bound to try first. Egon and Janine had been ‘close’ from the very beginning though he’d never taken a step in her direction, but now he was almost certainly going to change all that. Ray continued to lay the table, meanwhile upstairs his colleagues, except for Peter, were awake and been struck by the same thought. None of them would admit it to anyone but themselves, but they each had a ‘pit of the stomach’ ache of jealousy. Deciding to take action before anyone else stepped in Ray skipped out straight after breakfast. Janine arrived as usual and was confronted by his gift box of chocolates on her desk. Realising that the spell hadn’t weakened at all she shook her head, not knowing what to do about it. ‘Oh no!” she muttered to herself as four sets of footsteps thumped down the stairs. “Hi Janine!” Peter called out, rather over enthusiastically. “Morning, are you responsible for this Ray?!” she asked, forcefully, hoping to discourage him. Her hazel haired friend nodded. “Well I’m sure I haven’t done anything extra-ordinary of late to warrant it, but…” her voice trailed off as she was confronted by four huge grins. ‘Oh brother!’ she thought to herself. She sat down and got on with her work, but every now and then one or other of the guys would stop by and pay more than the usual amount of attention to her, Ray and Peter especially. Just before five she was about to close up when a voice hailed her, “Janine?!” Turning round she saw Peter come bounding out of his office. “Something the matter?” she asked, inquisitively. “No, not wrong, just wondered if you’d like to go out for the evening that’s all?” She paused for a moment. ‘Wait a minute, did Peter just ask me out on a date?’ she thought. ‘He wouldn’t have done that under normal circumstances, but things are definitely not normal right now!’ “Err, well…” she sputtered. “Or maybe I could get us a take-away instead?” he pushed further. “Peter…?” Overhearing their conversation, Egon walked down the stairs. “Actually Janine I was going to ask you if you’d like to accompany me to the Opera tonight.” Peter glared at him and Egon glared back. Noting the obvious green-eyed monster in both their eyes she decided to act to save her from a very awkward situation. “Look, why don’t we all go out?” she asked, in compromise. “DONE!” came four voices; Ray and Winston had overheard and shouted down the fire pole. She shook her head in exasperation and headed home to get ready. Having ‘spruced’ herself up she took a cab to the Firehouse. “Wow! You look HOT!” Peter called out, decked out in a very smart ‘get-up’ himself. Although it went against the grain, she had to admit that Peter looked more handsome than usual in his new shirt and trousers. She couldn’t stop herself from smiling at him and he smiled back. Walking towards her he tucked her arm under his and waited for his colleagues to ready themselves. She decided not to put up a fight, as her first reaction would have been to do. Despite everything Peter was being nice for a change and she didn’t want to spoil it! Egon was the first to emerge from upstairs. He’d put on his best ‘smart casual’ wear and was most taken aback by Peter’s gesture towards Janine. He glared at Peter, but knew there wasn’t much he could do about it, especially as Janine didn’t seem to mind, which he thought was very unusual for her. Ray and Winston followed a few seconds later, equally smartened up. Each of them was disappointed to see that Peter had ‘got in first’. They ended up at an up-market dance club and sat down with a round of drinks. Peter sat Janine down next to him and Egon sat on the other side of her, with the intention of acting as chaperone. At one point while the others were at the bar, Peter found himself alone with Janine for a few moments and he made full use of the opportunity. He rested his hand on hers and smiled at her in that charming boyish manner of his, which he put on whenever he wanted to make a girl’s heart melt. She looked at him, puzzled but at the same time flattered, by this sudden change in his behaviour. ‘The effects of the talisman are not all bad’ she thought. Suddenly he picked up her hand and kissed the back of it making her flinch a little. “Peter…why are you doing this?” she asked, trying to bring him to his senses. “I just wanted to, don’t know why really” came the reply. She looked at him and from the expression on his face he wasn’t even capable of questioning his actions. Just then the others returned and Peter let go of her hand, however Egon sussed what had been going on and moved his chair a little closer to her. ‘I’ve gotta find a way of breaking this spell!’ she thought to herself. ‘Before things get out of hand!’ Peter decided to take a more subtle approach, so he put his hand on her knee under the table, which made her flinch again. “Not cold are you?” Ray asked, seeing her ‘shiver’. “No, no, just a little tired that’s all” she replied, trying to stifle her embarrassment. After a while the disco started up and Janine was obliged to give them at least one dance each. Egon went first, followed by Ray and Winston. Peter waited until the others were starting to tire before he took his turn. Unfortunately they’d had a tiring bust earlier in the day and it wasn’t long before Egon, Ray and Winston were ‘sitting out’. Peter took full advantage and ushered Janine away from them through the crowd of dancing folk. This unnerved Janine considerably. Up until now it’d just been ‘messing about’ but now things were beginning to take on a more serious note. “Peter…just what are you up to?” she enquired forcefully. He simply smiled at her and put his arms around her shoulders. “Didn’t want Egon to see this…” he replied, leaning closer he kissed her softly on the lips. She pulled back. “Peter!” she scolded. As good a friend as he was, he was JUST a friend, nothing more. It was Egon she’d always had the ‘hots’ for. However he apparently hadn’t even heard her outburst. He was in over his head and just stared into her eyes, mesmerised. Running his hands down her back, he held her closer and kissed her again, this time more passionately. She tried to get away, but he just held her tighter. He pulled their bodies closer and put his hands on her rear. It was extremely difficult for her to resist, but resist she knew she must. In all the years she’d known Egon he’d never done anything like this and she wished with all her heart that it were him who was holding her instead of Peter. “Let me take you home?” Peter whispered in her ear and began kissing her neck. Despite the extremely pleasurable feelings Peter was stirring in her, for the sake of any future relations with Egon that had to be the final straw. “No, thank you” she replied, firmly but not harshly. She pushed him away. Peter looked disappointed, but knew he’d gone too far. “Sorry” he apologised.
The next morning in the lounge Ray and Winston decided to quiz Peter about the evening. “Just where did you and Janine disappear to all that time?!” Ray asked. Peter’s face reddened a little, “Well, we were just dancing, but I was just overcome with a feeling that I’ve never had before…I just had to kiss her. I wanted to make her mine…” his voice trailed off, his eyes glazed over, evidently just the thought of Janine had the same effect as it had done at the club. “Geezz Pete, you sound like you’re in love with her!” Winston joked, hiding his own feelings of that nature towards Janine. Ray picked up the picture he’d scrawled a few days ago. “Hmmm” he moaned audibly, causing the others to stare at him. “Well she is nice you gotta admit!” Ray responded, his face glowing a lovely shade of red. Try as they might they all had the same feeling, like Janine was the only girl in the world.
It had been two days since her ‘encounter’ with Peter and she could hardly get her mind off it. She arrived at work in a daydream and somehow got through the morning’s work. Egon sent Winston, Ray and Peter out on an errand to test some new equipment and while they were gone Janine decided to take advantage of the opportunity. She wandered upstairs and entered Egon’s lab, remembering to knock first. The last time she just walked in she got covered in slime after one of his experiments went wrong, yet again! Egon turned and looked at her. She seemed more beautiful than ever. He smiled at her, something she rarely saw him do. In his mind she’d turned into a scantily clad Hawaiian style-dancing girl! She walked towards him, but all he could see was her dancing faster and faster, seducing him. He stood up, grabbed her and kissed her passionately. “Oh Egon!” she moaned, overcome with passion herself. She mentally scolded herself for wishing the talisman’s spell to end!! “Is this a free show or can anyone join in?” Peter asked, leaning on the doorframe. Evidently the errand hadn’t taken as long as they’d expected. Egon dropped Janine and cleared his throat. “Err hmm.” Janine scooted out of the door before anyone could say a word and Peter followed at a distance. On the way he took great delight in telling Ray and Winston what he’d just caught Egon doing!! “Well I wouldn’t have believed it myself if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes!” Peter laughed. ‘That’s it, I gotta get that spell broken right now!’ she muttered to herself. On her way home she stopped by the shop where she’d bought the talisman, asking for advice. “According to the legend the only way you can break the spell is to be as far away from the ‘spellbound’ as you possibly can and eventually it’ll wear off by itself. In other words you need to take a vacation, for at least two weeks.” She thanked the shopkeeper and headed back to her apartment. “How do I get Peter to agree to let me have a two week vacation?!” she moaned. “He’ll throw a fit!” She stopped and thought for a moment. “Would he though…under current circumstances?” The more she thought about it the more confident she felt at being able to convince him it would be a good idea.
The next morning she decided to put her plan into action. She got her chance sooner than she thought when the others went out to do some shopping, Peter was sleeping in his office so they’d decided to go without him. “Peter?” she said quietly. The sound of her voice had its effect. He woke right up and looked at her. “Do you mind if I take a two week vacation?” she began. “Sure, you deserve a break” came the reply. She was stunned; he ALWAYS balked at her taking time off!! “Thank you Peter” she replied and turned to go back to her desk, but was halted by a hand on her shoulder. “Just what’s up with you and Egon?” Peter asked. “Well only what you saw!” she laughed. “Yeah, but I thought we had an…understanding?” “Peter…” she fumbled for a response. He had that look in his eyes again. She would have to get onto booking that vacation straight away! He stroked her cheek with one hand and put the other arm around her. After what had happened with Egon she felt less inclined to play along this time. “Peter…” she said again, trying to distract him. Fortunately the phone rang and saved her from any further awkwardness. Peter yawned and wandered upstairs. He slumped onto his bed and drifted off into a deep sleep. It wasn’t long before he started dreaming, about Janine of course.
In the dream…he and Janine were lovers, of course and while the others were out they were chasing each other around the Garage. Suddenly darting across her path he scooped her up in his arms and carried her upstairs. She was giggling uncontrollably. He kicked open the bunkroom door and heeled it shut behind them. Very carefully he sat her on his large four-poster bed and knelt in front of her. She smiled down at him and he smiled back. He put his hands on her shoulders and stroked them gently. All of a sudden Slimer interrupted their moment and Peter had to lure him out of the bunkroom with a bag of doughnuts!! Afterwards they both fell about laughing over the ‘close call’! Both their respiratory rates had gone up a gear from laughing so much, but his started to deepen when he gently pushed her back on the bed and rolled on top of her. She could feel a distinct temperature rise from him too. He put his hands under her top and softly stroked her tummy. Now it wasn’t just Peter’s temperature that was beginning to rise!! She could feel herself getting more and more aroused and having Peter smooching her on the neck only served to add to it. “Mmmm!” she moaned softly. He looked down at her with heavily glazed eyes. They smiled at each other and Peter lifted her top off over her head. Without a moments pause for thought, they stripped, crawled under the bedding and Peter enthralled her with passionate lovemaking. “Ohhhh Peter… you stud!!!” she groaned, her voice laden with lust, as they reached the peak of their ‘ministrations’.
While Peter slept Janine busied herself calling travel agencies. She booked a two week trip to Europe, ‘That should be far enough away!’ leaving the following week. Which would give her plenty of time to organise a temp to fill in while she was away. As far as she was concerned, the vacation couldn’t have come soon enough!!! Despite her nagging pangs of guilt over causing the ‘spell’ she did enjoy herself. When she returned she was all too pleased to see the guys were back to normal and that none of them seemed to be able to remember much about the days before her trip. “Janine I don’t recall giving you permission to go away for two weeks?!” Peter groaned. “Well you did!” she laughed, relieved.
