I Always Liked That Best

Chapter One

"I can't believe we're putting up with this...again," Evelyn said, slowly helping her best friend wash the dishes. "I mean...they're always out playing golf and we just stay at home and do housework. It's just not right."

Rose nodded in agreement. "Yes, but you know the boys."

"Yeah," Evelyn said back sarcastically. "I know the boys."

After they were done doing the dishes, they went into the Dawson's living room where they both sat down on the black leather sofa. Evelyn tiredly placed her feet on the coffee table. "What a day."

Just then the front door to the Dawson's apartment opened.

"You only beat me by a little," Jack mumbled.

"Nine holes is not little!" Rafe said back, laughing along with Jack. All of the laughter came to an end when they saw the look on their wife's face. They both had their arms folded, looking quite annoyed.

"What happened to seeing a movie today?" Evelyn asked.

"Ummm..." Rafe replied. "Honey, we can still do that. Look." He held up his watch. "It's only four o'clock."

Evelyn leaned over to Rose. "You wanna go to the seven o'clock?" Rose nodded. Evelyn smiled back at the guys. "Okay...you two...you are both taking your wives to a romantic dinner and a movie." She gave them another rude look. "No complaints."

"Why would I complain about that, baby?" Rafe asked, holding her in his arms. "I'm sorry I've been caught up in this golf business lately...I promise it won't go on. I'm happiest when I'm with you." This little speech of Rafe's made Evelyn smile and slightly laugh. Then she kissed him.

Rose was already happily lounging in Jack's warm arms. She just took his scent in. "For now on I'm not letting you leave."

Jack laughed. "Not even to go to work?"

"Nope."

"But how will you go shopping with no money?"

Rose thought about this for a second. "Okay, I'll allow you to go to work."

Jack laughed again. "Thanks." He kissed her on the top of her head.

Rose hummed to herself as she got ready for the evening. She put on her make-up, did her hair, and slipped into her favorite dress. It was a pretty color of light green. She always had adored it.

Jack knocked on the bathroom door. "You ready, hun?"

"Yeah, almost."

"Hurry up."

Rose rolled her eyes and finished up. When she came out she saw Jack sitting on the couch, skimming through the morning paper. A matter of seconds went by, and then he glanced up at his wife. "Oh, Rose," he said sweetly. "You look gorgeous." He got Rose to smile at the compliment.

"I know."

He chuckled at her remark. "You're funny."

She just smiled as he took her arm and went out the door. The McCawley's lived right across the hall from them. They had been best friends since the Dawson's moved in five years ago. They were all in their mid-twenties.

"I plan on having a lot of fun tonight," Rose said, smiling up at Jack as the McCawley's entered the hall.

"Yeah, me too," Evelyn said, pulling Rafe closer to her.

After they all went to the movie, they went to a small little restaurant close to their apartments. They lived in Chicago.

"Oh my gosh..." Rose muttered after everyone had been seated. The only one who heard her was Evelyn. Rose leaned over the table and whispered to Evelyn. "See that guy over there?" Evelyn nodded. "I used to date him."

He was tall with brown hair. He had a sense of evil to him that Evelyn couldn't quite pick out. "Oh my."

Finally, their waiter came. "Good evening. I'm Ralph, I'll be your waiter." Rose couldn't help but notice he was probably new. "What can I get for you this evening?" He took everyone's orders and then disappeared back into the Kitchen.

"Danny!" Rafe said suddenly, getting out of his chair.

"Rafe!"

The two guys hugged like they had been best friends for years. "I haven't seen you since college. How've you been?" Rafe asked.

"Good. Good."

"Oh, where are my manors?" Rafe laughed at himself. "This is my wife Evelyn and these are my two best friends Jack and Rose."

Danny smiled at them. "Nice to meet you."

"Would you like to join us?" Evelyn asked him.

"No thanks, I'm meeting someone, but it was great seeing you again, Rafe."

"Listen...Danny," Rafe said, walking away with him. "Why don't you come over to my place tomorrow for dinner and we can catch up on old times."

"Sounds great."

"I live at that apartment building three blocks down. The big tan one." Danny nodded, knowing what he was talking about. "Apartment 427. Does seven o'clock sound okay with you?"

"Perfect."

"See ya then."
