Pain Is Love

Prologue

This was taking forever!

Rose tiredly looked up at the clock and noticed that she'd been waiting for more than an hour. All she wanted was someone to help her with the dress she had found. This was absurd.

There came that woman again. She had blonde hair and a really fake smile. She was probably about her age. "Excuse me, mam!" Rose said, anger filling her body. "I've been waiting for..."

"I'm sorry, miss, I'll be with you in a minute."

She tried to walk away again, but Rose pulled her back this time. "No...no...I don't think you understand. I am Rose DeWitt Bukater and..."

"DeWitt Bukater? Did you say...DeWitt Bukater?"

Rose smiled. It had worked. "Why, yes."

"Right this way, please," the woman said, finally giving in.

A smile spread across Rose's face. She loved having power! It was so great. Her whole family was rich and she loved it. She could have whatever she wanted. Anything her little heart desired.

After they were done fitting her dress, Rose walked out of the expensive store with a proud grin. That was until...

"Hey you!"

Rose turned around. There was a man sitting on a bench in the small lobby of the store. He had blonde shaggy hair, and the most piercing blue eyes Rose had ever seen. He was wearing a basketball shirt and some old jeans.

"Yeah...I'm talking to you, bitch!"

Rose's mouth dropped with shock. "Excuse me?"

"What makes you think you can treat people like that?" He asked, giving a dirty look to the bag Rose was holding that contained the $2,000 dress.

"What?"

"Oh, don't act dumb with me, girl," he said, dropping his cigarette onto the floor and crushing it with his foot. "Just because you're rich doesn't mean you're better than everyone else."

Rose laughed. "Well, I'm obviously better than some people, wouldn't you say?" She studied his clothes.

"Watch what you say, hoe. You don't know me!"

She laughed again, but inside she was a little scared.

Then, the owner of the store came out. "Hey! You aren't supposed to be here!" He said, looking in the young man's direction. "The police told you..."

"Fuck the police!" He said back to the elderly man.

"Leave or they will be back!"

He shook his head. "Come on, Rose, let's get out of here," he said, grabbing Rose's hand and walking out of the lobby.

How did he know her name? Rose was to shocked to drop his hand or storm off, like she usually would.

After they got safely to the parking lot, he dropped her hand. "Do you have a square?"

"Excuse me?"

"You know...a cigarette?"

"No."

He nodded. "Too bad."

"Hey," Rose started. "How did you know my name?"

He chuckled. "Everyone in this damned town knows your name."

This was a bit awkward. This man was scaring her, but she was a bit scared to just walk off. He seemed calmer now, unlike how he had been back at the store. She wanted to keep him that way, too.

"What's your name?" She asked him.

"JD."

"Oh." Rose didn't know what else to say.

"Hey, do you got a cell phone I can use?" He asked.

Rose reached into her leather purse and handed it to him. He looked at Rose gratefully and dialed a number. "Yeah, hey Ricky, this is Jack. What up? Uhhh...just wanted to tell you that them mother fuckers were there last night. Where the hell were you? You know this fight can't go down without you there! Give me a call back, aight? Holla."

Rose had never heard anyone talk like that in my life.

"Here ya go," he said, handing it back.

"Thanks."

"You're not as bad as everyone says, Rose," he said, as if it were a compliment.

"What does everyone say?"

"Never mind that," he said, waving one of the city buses over to where thet were. "It was nice talking to you, though. Take care of that dress. It was a fuckin' fortune, ya know? Bye, beautiful."

And, with that...he was gone.
