“Angel”, the third single
from the Like A Virgin LP, is perhaps most
famous for its b-side,
the mega hit, “Into the Groove”. “Angel” also took a backseat to “Material Girl”
and
“Crazy For
You”, two of Madonna’s biggest hits ever, released just a few weeks
before.
Add to the fact that no music
video was made for the song, it’s no wonder "Angel"
has
now been all but forgotten.
Despite being so unmemorable
today, the single did, nonetheless, perform well on the
charts. It peaked at
#5 on the Hot 100, becoming Madonna’s sixth top 10 hit. Nonetheless, “Into the Groove” was far more popular
at the time, rendering “Angel” just another song lost in the shuffle. On a more positive note, it is worth noting that
the song is one of the strongest tracks on the Like A
Virgin album and was very successful in dance clubs, peaking at #1 on the
Club Play chart.
