"Bad Girl" is one
of Madonna's most underperforming singles in her chart history. With a Hot 100
peak of only #36, the song barely
found a place in the top 40, proving that Madonna's music is not
invincible. "Bad Girl" became Madonna's first
single since 1983 to miss the top 20. It
was only her
third single since 1983 to
miss the top 10 (the others being "Holiday" and "Oh Father").
The song
definitely signaled a change
in the tides for Madonna, as five of her next twenty-two singles would
miss the top 40, while only
ten of those twenty-two would hit the top 10.
The American single for
"Bad Girl" featured the song "Fever" as its b-side. The song was
accompanied by a music video
of its own and even received a small amount of radio airplay.
"Fever" became a
big hit around the world when it was released abroad as a commercial
single.
In the United States, the song became a dance hit, thus accounting for the
success of "Bad Girl"
on the maxi-single
chart.
Despite its dismal chart
performance, "Bad Girl" is widely considered by Madonna fans to be
one
of her best singles. The song tells the tale of an unhappy woman and
is bolstered by a movie-like
video which features Madonna
as a lonely, promiscuous, nicotine-addicted, businesswoman.
Directed by David Fincher,
the video also features a cameo with actor Christopher Walken, who
plays Madonna's guardian
angel.
