“Causing A Commotion”, the second single release from the Who’s That Girl soundtrack, shot up

the charts but wasn’t able to crack the #1 spot, becoming yet another of many singles to settle for

the runner-up position.  The song, although catchy and very danceable, is possibly the most dated

of all Madonna's 80’s hits.  A creative step backwards from the timeless classics spawned by

True Blue, “Causing A Commotion” ---like “Who’s That Girl”--- failed to appear on Madonna’s

1990 greatest hits compilation, The Immaculate Collection.

Although the song did not have a video, Madonna did perform the track live via satellite at the

1987 MTV Video Music Awards.  That year, “Papa Don’t Preach” won a moon-man for best

female video.  The other nominees were Janet Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, and ---guess who? ---

Madonna again with “Open Your Heart”.

With the recent worldwide success of True Blue, along with the Who’s That Girl soundtrack,

movie, and tour, Madonna’s career was lightening hot in 1987.  In 1988, however, she would be

virtually absent from the music scene, releasing no new songs whatsoever.  In fact, her chart

presence on Billboard would have been nonexistent that year if not for one thing --- “Causing A Commotion” spent its final week on the Hot

100 during the first week of 1988.
