After the controversy and intensity of “Like A Prayer” and “Express Yourself,” “Cherish” marked a return to a more

carefree, joyous Madonna.  With the lyrics “Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet, so don’t underestimate

my point of view,” “Cherish” was pure pop perfection.

For the video, Madonna recruited Herb Ritts, the same high-priced photographer

who shot the cover for the True Blue LP, amongst many other well known

photos.  Herb Ritts had never attempted the making of a music video and was at

first hesitant to take on the project.  But, after a little coaxing, Ritts gave in and

“Cherish” became one of Madonna’s most stylish and memorable video clips.

Shot in black and white, the video played Madonna’s voluptuous sexuality to the

max while at the same time maintaining a quality of sheer innocence.  It featured

Madonna with short blonde hair dancing cheerfully by the ocean with a little mer-

boy and watching a mer-man swimming out at sea.

“Cherish,” unfortunately, became yet another of Madonna’s hits forced to settle

for the runner-up position on the charts.  The song became the last in an amazing

steak of sixteen consecutive top 5 singles, overtaking the Beatles on a list of

artists with the all-time most consecutive top 5 singles in the U.S.  The song also

became the last in a streak of seventeen consecutive top 10 singles, tying her with

Michael Jackson for the artist with the most consecutive top 10 singles in the

1980's.  Oh Father,” the follow-up to “Cherish,” would become Madonna’s first

single in six years to miss the top 10.
