Although probably the strongest dance track on the entire Erotica album, the

performance of "Deeper and Deeper" was hindered by public backlash against the

over-sexed imagery of the recent "Erotica" video and Madonna's highly criticized

book of pornography, Sex.  The song peaked at #7 on the Hot 100, but is today

one of Madonna's least memorable top 10 hits.  The song was, however, recently

included as the first track on Madonna's second greatest hits album, GHV2.

An analysis of the song written by Dan Cadan, close friend to Madonna and Guy

Ritchie, suggests that the lyrics of "Deeper And Deeper" indicate a boy's struggle

to accept his homosexuality.  Whether or not this is the true meaning of the song is

uncertain.  Cadan's analysis of the song appears in the GHV2 CD booklet insert.

The video for "Deeper and Deeper" which is reminiscent of the 1970's disco era,

features Madonna on the club scene looking rather unattractive to many.  Although

superficially it is nothing more than fun and glitz, a deeper analysis of the video reveals

a very compelling storyline.  Essentially a "fall from innocence", the video begins by

showing Madonna simply having fun in a dance club.  As the video progresses,

however, Madonna's curiosity leads her down a stairwell into a rather seedy environ-

ment where she meets her lover (played by Udo Kier).  A balloon burst sounds like

a gunshot to Madonna and her world soon becomes a crazy swirl.  The video is filled

with sexual symbolism, most notably the scene in which Madonna and a group of

females eat bananas while watching a man wearing only underwear pose for them.
