“Dress You Up”, the fourth and final release from the Like A Virgin LP, is yet another

song that has been ---until recently--- all but forgotten.  Even though the song is a catchy

enough pop tune, it seems a bit uninspired with lyrics like “I’m gonna dress you up in my

love, all over your body, from your head down to your toes”.  Also, like “Angel”, “Dress

You Up” fell in the shadows of some of Madonna’s biggest hits ever and did not have a

proper music video.  In fact, the video is simply made up of footage from a live

performance of the song during the 1985 Virgin Tour.

It is interesting to note, however, that in 1985 the song was put on a list of fifteen so-called “filthy pop songs” by a tiny group called the Parent’s Resource Center, headed by Tipper Gore, wife of future vice-president, Albert Gore.

Virtually forgotten, it wasn’t until years later in the late 1990’s when the Gap clothing chain used the song in an advertisement campaign that “Dress You Up” was suddenly resurrected from the dead, cementing its place in pop culture history.  The commercial featured models singing the lyrics to a remix version of the song done by the Dust Brothers.  Suddenly, a whole new generation of teenagers were singing along with an old hit that ---prior to the commercial--- they did not know existed.  The Gap commercial was quite successful and continues to be memorable even today.
