“Everybody” is the song that
started it all. Used originally as a
demo to showcase her talent for record
executives and DJs, Madonna later added the song to her debut,
self-titled 1983 album. Coming to life
somewhere between the death of disco and the rise of 80’s synth-pop, the song is a simple call to the
dance floor.
“Everybody, come on, dance and sing.
Everybody, get up, do your thing.”
With a
rather weak chorus line and overly repetitive lyrics that do
little to stimulate the intellect, the song is a
far cry from the pop perfection Madonna would later
achieve in her music. The song is,
nonetheless, a catchy tune with a good beat and it accomplishes exactly what it
set out to --- it made people dance and more importantly, convinced executives
that the giggly, gum chewing blonde was worthy of a record deal afterall!
Although commercially
released as a single, the song failed to catch on with mainstream audiences
and, consequently, did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was, however, a huge dance club
success. The song peaked at #3 on the
Club Play chart and had an impressive sixteen week chart run. The song also managed to peak at #7 on the
Billboard Bubbling Under 100 chart, a chart listing songs that are on the verge
of breaking into the Hot 100.
