"Fever"
is one song in a handful of Madonna singles to be released internationally, but
not in the United
States.
The single reached the top 10 in Japan and the United Kingdom, but wasn't even strong enough
to dent the top 40 in Australia. The single
was also released in France, but failed to chart at all in that
country.
In the United States, "Fever" was released as the b-side of
"Bad Girl" and was accompanied by a very
unique music video. It featured Madonna with bright red hair,
wearing various bizarre outfits, including
one where she was completely drenched in
silver paint. Other than the elaborate
costuming, the video
was a rather simplistic clip which merely
showed Madonna dancing in front of a background of changing
imagery.
The video was directed by Stephane Sednaoui, who directed the "Give
It Away" video for the
Red Hot Chili Peppers two years earlier. Sednaoui would later introduce Madonna to
Mirwais, who
would produce the Music LP.
In addition to a video shown frequently on
MTV, the song also received a minimal amount of radio
airplay.
"Fever", nonetheless, had little impact in the United States outside of dance clubs, where the
song was released with tremendous success as a
slightly souped-up re-edit known as "Edit One". This
version of the song was also used for the
video.
"Fever", of course, is not an
original Madonna song. It was written
some fifty years ago and was
originally recorded by Peggy Lee, who in 1958
took the song all the way to #8 on the Billboard Hot
100. "Fever"
has since been covered by dozens of artists, including Elvis Presley whose
rendition
became quite popular.
