Of all Madonna's singles to
be held back at #2, "I'll Remember" is the one most deserving
of the #1 position.
Stuck at #2 for a whopping four weeks behind the song "I
Swear" by
one-hit-wonder All-4-One, "I'll Remember" was easily one
of the biggest hits of 1994.
Also, with more than two
months in the top 10 and more than six months on the Hot 100,
the single is one of Madonna's longest-running chart hits
to date. The single didn't fare
quite so well on the Maxi-Singles chart, however. "I'll Remember" is Madonna's only
maxi-single to miss the top 20 on its respective chart. The only other maxi-singles
to miss the top 10 are both for ballads without dance
mixes --- "Rain" and "You'll See".
"I'll Remember" was
written for the hit movie, With Honors, starring Joe Pesci
and Brendan
Fraser and appears on the
film's soundtrack. It was not available
on a Madonna album until
1996, when
it was included on Madonna's collection of ballads, Something to Remember.
Although the song itself is
quite wonderful, its accompanying video is not very notable.
It was directed by Alek Keshishian, who also
directed With Honors as well as Madonna's
show all/tell all documentary, Truth Or Dare. Similar in style and appearance to the
"Rain"
video, the clip shows Madonna with short black hair merely
singing the song in a studio
while scenes from the With Honors film appear in the
background behind her.
The release of "I'll
Remember" was a huge leap forward for Madonna, helping to push her
out of the shadow of the scandalous Sex and Erotica
projects, while at the same time
furthering her newfound success as an adult contemporary artist. While "Rain" may have
broken the ice, "I'll Remember" completely melted
it away.
