“Lucky Star”, the fifth and final single from Madonna’s
debut album, is the song and video that launched an entourage of Madonna
“wannabes”. Peaking at #4 on the Hot
100, "Lucky Star" became Madonna’s second of 17 consecutive top 10
hits. The song, penned by Madonna
herself, is based on the children’s nursery rhyme and is perhaps one of her
cheesiest yet most beloved and memorable singles to date.
The video features Madonna,
dressed in true “boy toy” fashion, dancing before
an all-white floor and
background. The strong contrast of black
on white made
for an interesting,
eye-catching video that was played frequently on MTV.
The reason for its wild
popularity is evident. First, you have a
teasingly sexy
bleached blonde babe writhing
around on the floor, throwing seductive glances
at the camera while she belts
out a childishly innocent pop song.
These elements,
mixed with the fact that such
tantalizing visual imagery was a new concept for
popular music during the
early video era, was enough to make even the most
unsuspecting viewer tune in
for a three minute glimpse of the pop tease.
With
the “Lucky Star” video and
the previously popular “Borderline” video now
under her “boy toy” belt,
Madonna had already become one of MTV’s
biggest stars and with her
upcoming sophomore album, would soon make her indelible mark on the world as a
pop, sexual, and cultural icon.
