“Material Girl”, the second release from the Like A Virgin LP, is
the song that
gave Madonna the nickname she has despised from day one. In fact, Madonna
once said in an interview that she regrets having recorded the song
because of
it. Nearly two decades and at least forty hit
singles later, the name still sticks
and the song and video remain amongst Madonna’s best pop efforts. Since the
name
“Material Girl” is now so ubiquitous, it may come as a bit of a surprise
that the song does not rank as one of Madonna’s many #1 singles. In fact,
the single became the first of several to stall in the runner-up
position.
In the video, Madonna shows off a glamorous new look based on her
real life movie heroine, Marilyn Monroe.
The video is an exact copy
of a scene in
(1953) and features some of the most impressive choreography to be
found in any
of Madonna’s work. Interestingly, it was
on the video’s
set that Madonna met actor Sean Penn, her soon-to-be husband.
Like
“Like A Virgin”, “Material Girl” was originally written with a
male singer in mind, but, after the lyrics were altered, Madonna made
the song all her own. Now another
pop classic, to call “Material Girl”
simply infectious would be a huge understatement. The chorus, “we
are living in a material world and I am a material girl” is amongst
some of the most
recognizable lyrics in pop music history.
