Summary of Madonna's Singles on the

Billboard Hot 100 Chart

Madonna has commercially released 50 singles in the United States.  While her first two singles "Everybody" (1982) and "Burning Up" (1983) failed to break onto the Hot 100, every commercially released single since has charted except for "Hollywood" (2003).  Her lowest peaking entry is "Nothing Really Matters" (1999) which stalled at #93, while her most successful chart title is "Take A Bow" (1994) which spent seven weeks in the #1 slot.

"Die Another Day" (2002) became Madonna's 35th top 10 single.  Only Elvis Presley has more top 10 singles, with 38 --- a record Madonna will likely surpass.

"American Life" (2003) became Madonna's 45th top 40 hit, recently surpassing Aretha Franklin as the woman with the most top 40 singles.

In 2000 "Music" became Madonna's 12th #1 on the Hot 100.  That total ties her with The Supremes' tally of chart-toppers.  Only Michael Jackson (13), Mariah Carey (15),

Elvis Presley (18), and The Beatles (20) have more.

Madonna has placed a single in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 every year since 1983, save for 1988 when she had no releases whatsoever.

According to the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA), Madonna has 24 gold singles (500,000 units shipped) to her credit, the most for any female artist.  She now ties The Beatles for second place behind Elvis Presley among artists with the most gold singles.  It should be noted that many more Madonna singles are likely due for gold certification.  Also, some of her gold singles are likely due to be re-certified as platinum.

Recently, some of Madonna's singles have not been commercially released in the United States.  Neither "Beautiful Stranger" (1999) nor "American Pie" (2000) were issued in the States.  Contrary to past Billboard regulations, non-commercially released songs are now permitted to chart on the Hot 100.  Such non-retail titles chart

only based upon their airplay points, since there is no sales component to help them move up the chart.  Thus, these album cuts often stall out on the lower reaches of the chart.  Notice the relatively low peaks of "Beautiful Stranger" (#19) and "American Pie" (#29).  Had these singles been given standard commercial releases, their sales components would have allowed the songs to chart much higher.  "Beautiful Stranger", for example, would have easily climbed its way into the top 10.

Previous to December of 1998, non-commercially released singles could not chart.  Hence the Hot 100 absence of hit songs such as "Into The Groove" (1985) and "Fever" (1993), which were not commercially released in the U.S.

Notes as indicated by superscript:

1          Though "Everybody" did not chart on the Hot 100, it did make it onto the Bubbling Under Hot 100.  The single debuted on Dec. 25, 1982 on the chart and peaked

at #107.  It spent eight weeks on the (then) 10 position chart.  The Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart lists the top singles which are poised to make an entrance onto

the Hot 100, but are bubbling under #100 --- hence the name of the chart.

2          "Everybody's" follow-up, "Burning Up," failed to dent either the Bubbling Under Hot 100 or the Hot 100.

3          "Crazy For You" is from the film Vision Quest and was not included on any Madonna album until The Immaculate Collection in 1990.  Previous to that, it could be

found only on the Vision Quest soundtrack along with another Madonna song, "Gambler".

4          The gold certification for "Angel" is for its 12" single (Sire 20335).  The B-side of the 12" single is "Into The Groove".

5          "Live To Tell" is from the film At Close Range, starring Madonna's then-husband, Sean Penn.  At the time of its release, the single was not available on any album.

When the title went to #1, it was only the fifth single in Hot 100 history to hit the top of the chart and not be available on an album.  "Live To Tell" later surfaced on

the True Blue LP, released in July of 1986.

6          "Ain't No Big Deal" is a previously unreleased track.  It was originally slated for Madonna's first album.

7, 8       "Who's That Girl" and "Causing A Commotion" are both from the film Who's That Girl, starring Madonna and Griffin Dunne.  Those songs, as well as two other

new Madonna tracks, "Can't Stop" and "The Look of Love", can be found on the Who's That Girl soundtrack.

9          "The Look of Love" is from the film Who's That Girl, and the only album on which it is available is the film's soundtrack.  The song was never promoted

in the United States, but was commercially released as a single in various countries around the world.  In the United Kingdom, one country where it was

released, the single peaked at #9.

10         "Supernatural" was an unreleased track until this point.  It also made an appearance on the AIDS benefit album, Red, Hot and Dance.

11, 12   "Vogue" and "Hanky Panky" are both from the album I'm Breathless -- Music From and Inspired by the film Dick Tracy.  "Vogue" is not from or inspired by the

film.  It was originally intended as the B-side to "Keep It Together" but Warner Bros. executives thought that the track was too strong to be relegated to B-side

status, so it was released on its own.  It was then tacked onto the I'm Breathless album.

13         "This Used To Be My Playground" is from the Penny Marshall film A League of Their Own, starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna.

The song plays during the closing credits of the movie but was not included on the film's soundtrack album.  At the time, the track was available only on the

album Barcelona Gold, a summer Olympics benefit album.  It later appeared on Something To Remember, a collection of Madonna's greatest ballads.

14         "Fever" is a remake of the 1958 Peggy Lee classic.  Madonna's version was never commercially released as a single in the United States but became a

modest hit, nonetheless, when the video fell into rotation on MTV and radio stations added the song to their playlists.  "Fever" was, however, released as a

commercial single in various countries abroad, including the United Kingdom where it peaked at #6.

15         The maxi-single of "Rain" includes the album version, a radio remix, a remix of the album cut "Waiting" with a rap by Everlast (formerly of House Of Pain, now a

solo artist), and a non-album track titled "Up Down Suite".  The latter track, in its shorter form, is also known as "Goodbye To Innocence" and can be found on

the Just Say Roe compilation album.  "Up Down Suite" can also be found on the French, Japanese, and German maxi-singles for "Rain," while "Goodbye To

Innocence" can be found on the Mexican maxi-single for "Rain."

16         "I'll Remember" is the theme from the film With Honors, starring Joe Pesci and Brendan Fraser.  Alek Keshishian, who also directed Truth Or Dare, directed the

film.  Patrick Leonard, who has worked with Madonna on various projects in the past, scored it.  "I'll Remember" can be found on the With Honors soundtrack,

Maverick's first soundtrack release.  It can also be found on Madonna's collection of ballads, Something To Remember.

17         Both "You Must Love Me" and "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" are from the film Evita, starring Madonna, Antonio Banderas, and Jonathan Pryce.  "You Must

Love Me" won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song.  The song was written specifically for the film and marked the first

collaboration with songwriters Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in over fifteen years.

18         "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" was released only as a maxi-single.  This is reflected by the catalog number.

19         "Has To Be" was a previously unavailable track in the United States.  It does appear on the Japanese release of the Ray of Light album and was originally

intended to be the 14th track on the U.S. version.  Supposedly because of Madonna's numerology interests at the time, she decided on letting the album

be released in the United States with only thirteen tracks, as 13 is considered a lucky number.

20         "Beautiful Stranger" is from the soundtrack to Austin Strangers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and was specifically written for the film.  "Beautiful Stranger"

was not commercially released as a single in the United States and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay points.

21         "American Pie" is from the soundtrack to The Next Best Thing, starring Madonna and Rupert Everett.  The 1972 classic was originally written and performed by

Don McLean and peaked at #1 on the Hot 100.  Madonna's version was not commercially released as a single in the United States and charted on the Hot 100

solely on airplay points.  The soundtrack also features a brand new Madonna song called, "Time Stood Still".

22         "Cyberraga" was produced and written by Talvin Singh and is not found on any album, except the Asian import of the Music LP.

23         "What It Feels Like For A Girl" was commercially released only as a maxi-single and DVD single.  The catalog number reflects the CD maxi-single.

24         "Die Another Day" was commercially released as a maxi-single only.  The catalog number is for the CD maxi-single.

25         "Hollywood" was commercially released only as a maxi-single.  The song stands next to "Everybody" and "Burning Up" as Madonna's only commercially

released singles which have failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.
