“Who’s That Girl”,
from the soundtrack of the 1987 Madonna movie bearing the same
name, was yet another #1 hit for the Material
Girl, but did little to help her career progress
forward.
Perhaps Madonna felt the same way, for the song is her only #1 hit (at
the time)
to not be included on her 1990 collection of
greatest hits, The Immaculate Collection.
The song and video reflect many of the same
themes explored in “La Isla Bonita”. The
chorus, “quién es, esa niña, who’s that girl”
is partially in Spanish and in the video
Madonna once again appears very boyish,
continuing in her phase of gender-bending.
The video also features an animated Madonna
and various seemingly random clips from
the Who’s That Girl movie. Also, the title of the song led critics to
believe that Madonna
was commenting on her own overexposure in the
media and her constant image changes.
Although “Who’s That Girl” the song and tour
were huge successes, the movie had a
rather pathetic audience turnout at theaters
and was forwarded straight to video.
Critics
gave the movie nothing short of scathing
reviews and argued that the “señorita más fina”
should stick to what she does best --- music.
