British and Australian
talent featured highly in this year's Bafta awards, Britain's
equivalent of the Oscars. Moulin
Rouge and The
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring each
received 12 nominations, Reuters reports. The two films will
battle it out in the best film category against A
Beautiful Mind, Shrek
and the French romantic comedy Amélie.
The stars of Richard Eyre's Iris,
Judi
Dench, Jim
Broadbent, Kate
Winslet and Hugh
Bonneville, each received nominations, as did Ian
McKellen for his portrayal of the wizard Gandalf in The
Lord of the Rings. Dench
also received a best supporting actress nod for her role in The
Shipping News. Nicole
Kidman received a best actress nomination for The
Others while fellow Aussie Russell
Crowe won a nomination for best actor in A

Someone who definitely
doesn't suffer from stage fright is Russell Crowe -
sauntering up to the mike, he said 'G'day folks' in such a
supremely confident manner that the word 'arrogant'
immediately sprang to mind. Curiously, writer of Best Drama
winner A Beautiful Mind Akiva Goldsman described
Rusty as 'graceful'. That has got to be a first.
Accompanied by the most famous handbag around, Danielle
Spencer, Russ set tongues wagging when he planted a big
juicy one on her lips after being announced the Best Male
Actor (Drama) for A Beautiful Mind. Described as an
actress - has she even done a movie since 1990's the
Crossing? - Danielle also recently released an album that
was as well-received as on-off boyfriend Rusty's
30-Odd-Whatever's. Maybe Russ sees her as a good luck charm -
Danielle also accompanied him to last year's Oscar ceremony,
where he picked up the big one for his role in Gladiator.--testra |
AUSSIES
CLEAN UP AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES
The Golden Globes are renowned for
being a big par-tay, but this year's affair definitely had a
more restrained mood than usual. The stars were certainly
ready to kick up their heels - glitter, sequins, satin and
colour being the order of the night when it came to the
fashion stakes - but last year's carefully propped up empty
bottles of Moet were nowhere to be seen. Maybe organisers
were scared of what could happen when vast amounts of
alcohol and Aussies were combined. Whatever the reason, the
2002 Golden Globe Awards were clearly dominated by the
Aussie contingent. Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Lisa
Gerrard, Naomi Watts, Cate Blanchett, Judy Davis, Simon
Baker, Hugh Jackman and Baz Luhrmann were all
there to represent Australia - and between them, they
cleaned up. Six Globes came our way in total - with the
raucous Aussie crowd cheering loudly as each winner went up
to collect their gong.

FROM the
"for what it's worth" files, #1: Syndicated US
columnist Liz Smith has quoted a movie insider who,
unlike so many others, believes the Golden Globes are a strong
indicator of who will walk away with an Oscar.
"It's an absolute slam-dunk
certainty that Russell Crowe will win Best Actor for A
Beautiful Mind and Nicole Kidman will win Best
Actress for Moulin Rouge", said the insider,
before adding: "Although Robert Altman won a
sentimental vote at the Globes for Gosford Park, I
believe Baz Luhrmann will win Best Director for Moulin
Rouge."
If that's the case, here's hoping
Crowie doesn't say "g'day, folks" and Baz keeps his
speech a bit shorter than his Globies effort. |
FROM the "for what
it's worth" files, #2: Jeffrey Wells, another of Confidential's
favourite US syndicated types, predicts a four to five Oscar
haul for A Beautiful Mind. On the Best Film category he
speculates: "Is a come-from-behind scenario possible for
any of the other four (expected to be nominated)? Lord of
the Rings, never. Moulin Rouge, forget it. In
the Bedroom, doubtful. But possibly, just possibly, Black
Hawk Down." |

TO ensure his
South Sydney Rabbitoh's fundraiser on Thursday night wasn't
overstocked with blokey footyheads, Russell Crowe made
sure there were a number of female athletes on the guest list.
Those invited up to Camp Crowe included taekwondo champ Lauren
Burns and chick-on-a-stick Tatiana Grigorieva.
Grigorieva and her husband Viktor
Chistiakov were flown up to Crowe's Coffs Harbour farm
from Melbourne where they were watching the Australian Open.

may question the worth of the Golden Globes Awards, the gongs

|
- IN her post-Globes wash-up, US
columnist Liz Smith says some nice things about the
Coffs Harbour lad. "Russell Crowe," she
writes, "isn't always popular in Hollywood, but he
redeemed himself on Sunday with a gracious, intelligent
speech. Maybe the Oscar voters will be kind in
March."
The biggest
excitement early on in the evening came at Trader Vic's where
three different camps set up shop immediately. These sites
were captained by Russell Crowe, Nicole
Kidman and Robert Altman.
Crowe entertained
his new/old girlfriend, a pretty blonde whom he recently
reconnected with, as well as Canadian rock singer Bryan
Adams. Adams told me he's finishing up work on a new
Disney animated feature for which he's written the songs and
also provides a voice over.
Crowe told me he'd
written his eloquent acceptance speech about 20 minutes before
the show started. How does he feel about possibly winning his
second Oscar in a row? "I'd be happy to join up with Spencer
Tracy and Tom Hanks," he
said, referring to the only other actors to win back-to-back
trophies. -- Fox News

Today's
Katie Couric, making a beeline for Russell Crowe
(who won Best Actor for Beautiful Mind, in case you
didn't know). The Golden Globes king was seated at a long
table in a tent set up for the DreamWorks party--the
soiree of the evening, trust me. After Ms. C.'s exclusive
audience with His Royal Thighness, I congratulated her on her
$60 million deal. (She seemed pleased, but who wouldn't be?) I
asked her why the notoriously media-shy Crowe loved her so
much.
"Oh, it's not me he loves,"
she confessed, "it's Tracy!"
At which point Tracy Ullman
came over and explained, in just so many Mae West ways,
why Russ-babe adores her. "Oh, baby!" she
cooed and vamped, as if that were all the explanation
necessary.
Then the accolade-laden comedian came
out of her sensual Aussie fog and chirped, "Hey, I know
you! You write that column, the one that's all in code."

story broke yesterday on the Internet claiming that DreamWorks

accusation is true, we'd be hugely disappointed," a
Miramax spokesperson said, "but, at this time of year,
these kind of rumors abound." |

RUSSELL Crowe (Left) was in prime prickly form at the
Sundance Film Festival Thursday night. At an audience Q&A
following a screening of "Texas" -a concert film
featuring his band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts - the ornery Aussie
snapped at several of his interrogators. "He was cutting
people off and saying things like, ‘Do I look like I'm
talking to you?' " says our spy. "He was like a
stern schoolmaster." At a Miramax-sponsored cocktail
party honoring Crowe and Nicole Kidman earlier that
evening, Crowe "walked in, took a look around, and walked
right out," says our spy. -- PageSix.com |
Flash Frozen Press-sicles:
Throughout the festival, there have been times when I've been
convinced the Sundance press office hates the press. Case in
point: Festival personnel asked media types to line up at
10:30 at night outside the Yarrow Theater--in frosty 11-degree
weather--to lob questions at Russell Crowe, who
produced Texas, a documentary about his rock band 30
Odd Foot of Grunts. "It's rude and irreverent, and you
get to see me do some stuff that most film companies would
never want to see...that's why I love it," he said.
- Speaking of rude, Crowe didn't show until nearly 11:30! But
the famously ornery Aussie seemed to have caught the Sundance
spirit nonetheless. Bundled in a cashmere overcoat and
sporting a full beard and long curly hair, he almost
cheerfully worked the line at his first Park City fest.
"I've been having a wow of a time," he said, with
a grin. "I've been listening to Harvey Weinstein
tell great stories over dinner." -- E!

Film Critics say 'Mind' is beautiful thing
Jan. 14, 2002
Universal Pictures, DreamWorks and Imagine Entertainment had
much to celebrate at the Broadcast Film Critics Association's
7th Annual Critics' Choice Awards Friday night: Their feature
film, "A Beautiful Mind," received a record four
awards including best picture, best actor for Russell Crowe,
best supporting actress for Jennifer Connelly and best director
for Ron Howard -- who tied for his award with helmer Baz
Luhrmann and his "Moulin Rouge," from 20th Century
Fox. "I saw a drawing of Ron Howard and I in Entertainment
Weekly -- a cartoon of us shaking hands -- yesterday,"
Luhrmann said. "They must be ahead of the game."
"Suffice to say, Opie done good!" said Crowe to Howard
as he accepted his own best actor award. Crowe's win at the
star-studded gala dinner held at the Beverly Hills Hotel gives
the actor three straight Critics Choice nods. He won last year
for an earlier Universal/DreamWorks effort,
"Gladiator," and the previous year for Buena Vista's
"The Insider."

1. Russell Crowe likes journalists. (Secretly, I think
he relishes the ruckus we help him create.) This man is absolutely brilliant:
He punishes the press like he does a role. If you do it right,
nothing gets you a matching Oscar faster--just ask Jack &
