Biography

Christina

Christina Maria Aguilera was born on December 19th, 1980 in Staten Island, New York. At the age of 22 Christina has claimed multiple platinum records, three grammy awards and record sales well over twenty million copies.

Singing


Christina was always the type of child who stood in front of the mirror singing into a hairbrush. Daughter of a tough Army Seargeant, whenever things got too tough between her Mom, Shelly and her Dad, Fausto "she'd run upstairs and put on the sound of music- that was her favourite video" says Marcie Reilly, a friend since seventh grade. "Somehow singing would come out of it, that's how she'd escape all the fighting and the horror".

Divorce


After having another daughter, Rachel, Fausto and Shelly seperated around 1986. Shelly moved with her daughters back to her hometown of Wexford. After her mother remarried Christina's family included siblings Casey, Robert Michael and Stephanie. For several years after the divorce, Christina has little contact with her father.

The Mickey Mouse club

Christina has a lot of big breaks, Christina began entering talent contests amd usually won first prize. Her first big break came when she performed on a show called Star Search with a rendition of "the greatest love of all". Although she failed to win it helped build her confidence performing. Her second big break came in 1990 when she auditioned for a Disney show "the Mickey Mouse club". Which featured future adult stars Britney Spears, Keri Russel and N sync stars, Jc Chasez and Justin Tinberlake. Originally Christina was judged as being too yound for the show but she was called back 2 years later to join the cast.

Bullying

During her two years at MMC she constantly has to change schools because of classmates jelous of her fame. She was relieved when she got a tutor when recording her debut album "Christina Aguilera"

Record contract

Her Mickey Mouse club experience done Christina a lot of favours and not long after Christina was chosen to sing a duet with a Japenese singer Keizo Nakanishi. Joining him on the song meant she had to go to Japan to shoot the video and she also joined him on tour. After returning to the United States in 1997 Christina made a demo tape to help her get a record contract. Her links with Disney helped her and in early 1998 she was chosen to sing a song for the mulan soundtrack called "Reflection". The song was a hit on the Adult contemporary chart and in the summer of 1998 Christina began recording her debut album "Christina Aguilera" with RCA records.

Success

The first song off the album "Genie in a bottle" was a massive hit and in Summer 1998 it went straight to number 1. It sold over two million records in the process. Two other songs off the album "Come on over" and "What a girl wants" were also big hits.

Criticism

Althought Christina was very successful, like pop sensation Britney Spears Christina also suffered a lot of criticism. Most of it centred around her video for "Lady Marmalade" from the movie Moulin Rouge.But Christina insisted it was all dress-up.

Grammys

Perhaps Christina's biggest accomplishments were winning 3 Grammys; best new artist in 1999. Best Spanish album in 2000 and Best pop collaboration with vocals for "Lady Marmalade" in 2002.

"Sorry you can't define me"

Christina shocked the nation with her new image in 2002. Her contreversial video for "Dirrty" received a lot of criticism. But she continued to ignore her critics. In 2002 Christina also released her new album "Stripped", Christina co-wrote most of the tracks and also worked with the likes of producer Linda Parry, Lil'kim and Alicia Keys. 2003 is certainely going to be a big year for Christina Aguilera.
