Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Aubrey J. Halfyard, CD

LCol Aubrey J. Halfyard was born and received his early education in St John’s.  Following graduation from high school., he entered the employment of the dept of the Auditor general where he pursued a career in the accounting and auditing field.  Over the span of service of thirty-six years he held a number of financial management positions in the Newfoundland Public service.  He retired as Director of Financial Services and Operations with the Department of Education on 31 March 1994.

LCol Halfyard became involved in the cadet movement as an army cadet with 2429 St Patrick’s RCACC in St John’s.  Following his cadet years he enrolled in the Cadet Instructors Cadre, as was appointed as training officer with his former cadet corps.  He remained with 2429 for two years and then transferred to 2515 St John’s Army Cadet Corps.  LCol Halfyard was later promoted to the rank of Major and Commanding Officer of that Cadet Corps.

In 1978 he was appointed to the position of Area Cadet Instructor Cadre Officer for Newfoundland at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and continued in that capacity until December 1993.  He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) in 1972 and the CD Claspin 1982.  He was awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 and the Canada 125 Anniversary Medal in 1993.  In 1996 he received the Meritorious Service Citation from the Chief of Defense Staff.

In addition to his involvement in the Cadet Instructor’s Cadre, LCol Halfyard has held a number of positions with the Army Cadet League of Canada.  These include President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Branch from 1984 to 1988 and National Army Cadet League President from 1994 to 1996.  He still serves on the Army Cadet League’s National Body as a Provincial Governor.  He currently holds the position of Treasurer for the Newfoundland and Labrador Branch and is Chairman of the Signal Hill Tattoo Historic Military Animation Program.  LCol Halfyard resides with his wife, Bertha, in Mount Pearl.  They have three daughters and two grandchildren.
