Graduation
By: Erin Bryan
On Friday, May 25 in the year of our Lord 2001 we said goodbye to the Class of 2001. The graduation was held in downtown Frederick at St. John’s Church. The stage was set. The church shuffled, turning towards the back doors at the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance.” The doors to the back of the church opened to the Seniors progressing down the isle to meet the destiny that awaited them.
The mass was resided by our own Father Reid. Mrs. Splaine, as usual was in charge of the musical accompaniment. Many of our seniors lead the church in readings and prayer, most notably was Erin Bushko and Laura Eaton’s memorable performance of “Ave Maria.”
The mass, however, was only the beginning. As the mass reached and end the church once again was filled with excitement. It was the moment that everyone had been waiting for. After Mr. Fairley welcomed everyone and gave a summary of what was to come, Mr. McNickle took center stage to announce this year’s Valedictorian, Stefanie Lynn Hartman.
Stefanie gave a touching speech, paying homage to her class. She reminisced on the old times, pointing out how it seemed that only yesterday that they were strangers, meeting for the first time at freshman orientation. She talked of how they learned to know more about each other with each passing year, and how they grew together. She then went on to wish her class luck in all their future endeavors, and to end it all quoted that memorable phrase, “May the Force be with You.”
Following the Valedictorian Address, even more honors were awarded. Mr. Fairley Presented his Headmaster’s Award to Veronica Lancaster. Mr. Boyer gave his Academic Award to Carlos Martinez. Mrs. LaCroce awarded the “In Cruce Glorior” Award to Stefanie Hartman. Lastly, Father Reid honored both Sally Lamarque and Brendan Kelly with the Chaplain Award.
After all was said and done, it was leading to this one moment. The inevitable had come. It was then time for the Seniors to accept their diplomas from our little school and move on to bigger and brighter things.
The Writer’s Thoughts on Graduation:
Going to school with the Class of 2001 for three years, the thought never occurred to me that one day it would all be over. The people that I looked up to, the friends and acquaintances that I had made and grown so fond of seeing each day when I came to school were now accepting their diplomas, and leaving me. I will never forget when they dropped books on me as a freshman when my locker was under theirs. I will never forget the feeling of being “taken under their wing.” I will never forget the first time one of them drove me around in their car. I will never forget the parties that we went to. I will never forget the classes that we had together. I will never forget the simple comfort of knowing they were there. I will never forget the goodbyes on their last day, and I will NEVER forget how proud I was when I saw them graduate.
The Class of 2001 has been, in my opinion at least, the most memorable class that I have known of at St. John’s at Prospect Hall. They were full of diverse and memorable individuals. Even though it is always hard to say goodbye, and I would rather still have them around, the time has come for them to move on. The time has come for them to sparkle and shine.
