The were three main men who worked on
the the making of th fence-
Canning-
Canning completed his survey of the No1
fence line on the 15th of January 1905. The survey included
preliminary examinations covering hundreds of miles on foot,
commenced at a point on the south coast and ended at Wallat on the
northwest coast. His original intention had been to build a timber
post and wire fence but because of shortage of suitable timber for
posts, 25 miles with one wooden post every four iron standards and
145 miles of all iron standards except the strainer posts.
Ankatell-
He was responsible for the
construction of the greater part of the fence and the survey of the
last 70 miles of it through waterless and inhospitable country, a
work that took from the 20th of August 1904 to the 30th of September
1907. During this time Anketell controlled a work force of 120 men,
230 camels, 210 horses and 41 donkeys with and average load for
transport of 375 miles.
Crawford-
Crawford was the chief inspector of
the No1 fence. If the rabbits took over he was responsble for the
maintenance of sections of the fence as they were completed until on
30th of September 1907 where the whole 1,139 miles of the barrier
fence, as it was called then under his charge. He was well equiped
for the task.
