Player of the Game: James Riebe (1-2, BB, HR, 2 RBI)

The boys of Club Tap tried to shake their early season woes once again this past Friday night against the redheaded stepchild of TUP-Stefaniak, but the Tappers ran their record to 0-3, falling 13-4.

Pitching was the biggest question mark coming into the game for the Tap boys as regular #1 starter Don Wadewitz was unable to make the game due to a prior commitment.  Lefty Skip Adams got his first start of the year, and surprisingly, didn’t make a huge ass out of himself, walking 3 and striking out 2 in five innings while yielding 13 runs.  It turned out that the weak link of the Tappers on this night was their defense, as bases went “un-backed-up” on throws into the infield, allowing multiple TUP players to take extra bases.

The Mariachis were fast and furious and the enchiladas were spicy early in the game as the men of TUP struck for 10 runs in the first three innings, putting the Club Tap boys behind the proverbial eight ball.  Dunn Riebe then took it upon himself to see that the Tappers would plate at least one runner in the game as he smashed a ball to right-center field that had TUP RCF “Eminem-clone” flailing and looking as if he belonged in the kiddie pool in the Wisconsin Dells.  With newcomer and stellar glove artist Danny Pamprin already on base with a sweet single, Riebe’s blast to right-center plated Pamprin and himself with ease as the Tappers had their first homer of the year and a quick two runs.

The game then proceeded to get a bit ugly as TUP hurler Dirty Sanchez started working the mound in a harassing way, repeatedly calling his own pitches strikes before they reached the plate.  In response, Tap manager Pianolegs Hanley made a defensive switch to replace mild-mannered Triebs behind the plate with local inebriated funnyman Chris Crizzle Carlson, resulting in the funniest 2 half-innings of defense in the history of Friday night Softball at West Milwaukee Park.  Carlson also provided some comic relief on his way to station himself as the 1st base coach in the bottom of the 5th inning.  Carlson nonchalantly walked across the field just as the TUP pitcher was about to deliver his first pitch of the inning, only to be referred to as an “idiot” by umpire Grumpy McGimpy.  Carlson, in response to McGimpy’s comment, raised his right index finger high in the air a la his idol, former Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish football coach Tyrone Willingham, while humming the theme music to Robert Redford’s The Natural.

On the offensive side, the boys of Club Tap, reacting to TUP pitcher Sanchez’ disgraces, responded to Sanchez with two infuriated runs, one each in the 4th and 5th innings.  The 4th inning saw the Club Tap boys with a chance to put a huge dent into Thumbs Up’s 12-2 lead with back-to-back-to-back-to-back singles by Goggles Christel, Skip Adams, Ryan “Papa” Miller, and Crizzle Carlson to start the inning, with a run plating on Carlson’s single.  With one run already in, the bases loaded and nobody out, the Tap boys were unable to score again in the inning as fill-in Bill and leadoff man Dave Eskra both struck out on foul balls.  The third out of the inning came as a result of a Danny Pamperin blistering liner to left-center field.

The Tappers felt they still had some more offense in them in the bottom of the 5th inning as singles by player-manager Hanley, Goggles Christel, and Skip Adams plated a run.  Alas, that would be the end of the scoring for the Tappers and the end of a classless game.

Next week will see the Tappers try for their first and second wins of the season as they take on rival team Network in a home-and-home doubleheader at 8 and 9 PM at West Milwaukee Park.
