Event Open House at the Centre Universitaire d'Informatique (Geneva, CH) Wednesday, March 5th 2003 On March 1st, the University of Geneva opened its doors for the public to 'discover the hidden face of computer science' (Découvrez la face cachée de l'informatique). About 200 hundered visitors showed up to witness the history of computer graphics unravel in front of them. The show started at about 20:00, beginning with a research animation (mostly dynamic cloth and hair simulations) by Miralab, Geneva University's computer graphics department. The show went on to show animations from as far back as 1965(!?). Those were actually plotted directly on 16mm film! The films that followed were from the 70's and 80's, showing innovations in 3D vector-based imaging and animation. As the show progressed, so did the quality of the films. There were films from the New York and Massachusetts Institutes of Technology which showed the birth of 3D geometry, shading, texturing and lighting. Following were classics such as Pixar's Knick-Knack and Luxo Jr. which unsurprisingly brought the crowd to applause. The evening came to an end with Alias|Wavefront's Bingo (by Chris Landreth)as the latest in technological advancments circa 1998. Although a very interesting and educational evening, I must say that the seats in the auditorium were insanely uncomfortable...that's all. You can find more info on Miralab here. |
