By far the Alligator Gar is the largest of the Gars, growing to a length of around ten feet and weighing well over 300 pounds. For obvious reasons they are almost always only seen in public aquariums. In fact, most fish sold in pet shops as "Alligator Gars" are actually smaller species, usually being the Shortnose Gar which grows to around three feet. These fish enjoy lurking amongst plants and reeds in wait for food. The water should be clean, clear, and kept at a cooler temperature. They can also live in brackish water. Some specimens may only accept live foods; others can learn to accept chopped beef or dead fish meat.
