Both died in a rented single engine plane that caught fire and crashed outside Dulles airport shortly after takeoff.

Dickson's plane had developed mechanical problems the week before and was not yet ready. Thus they rented the doomed plane after attending a briefing that morning on the Clinton administrations health care plan.

Heard, in addition to serving on Clinton's advisory council, also personally treated Clinton's mother, stepfather, and brother.
