'The standard book on modern falconry, written by the greatest living authority. A work which will, without doubt, live beside Latham, Salvin & Brodrick, Lascelles, Freeman and Michell in the annals of hawking litterature. Although the author does not delve into the same intricate detail as does Michell, his instructions are concise, lucid, and quite adequate for the beginner. They are equally useful to the experienced falconer.       R. H. Barber, 'A Suppl. Bibl. of Hawking'

This classic in falconry litterature I recommend to more experienced falconers as much has happened in falconry since Blaine wrote it. I believe it takes a falconer of some experience to know what is useful and what is obsolete in this classic.   Jakob Borch

****      Hardcover. 38 pp.+ 5 (1971 ed.). Two b/w pendrawings and a b/w photograph of the author. Introduction by Philip Glasier. Covers biology, hints on training and description of use in falconry in 19th century India of the longwings, shortwings and hawk-eagles of India. Much has happened in the field of classification, training and hunting, but despite it's not comprehensive it is interesting reading to the more experienced falconer.      Jakob E. Borch

"Col. Radcliffe's book has some very interesting information and gives one an insight into the period... Some of his remarks are a bit contradictory... But his hawks certainly flew well and many of his ideas on training are still very much to the point and well worth the notice of falconers today."      Philip Glasier, Foreword of the 1971 ed. of 'Falconry and Notes...'

Understanding The Bird Of Prey
Publ.: Hancock House
Year & place: 1995 Surrey, British Columbia
ISBN: 0-88839-317-2

****      Hard cover. 384 pp. 147 colour photos and 290 b/w drawings. Comprehensive gathering of data on the wild biology of birds of prey, their captive management, breeding, training, and rehabilitation. Written by a professional raptor biologist. Each chapter has been reviewed by international specialists for scientific accuracy.

It's outstanding... Nick Fox has become my number one hero. I want to recommend this book to everyone involved with falconry or any other aspect of birds of prey - administrators and politicians as well. This is the most important book I have read on falconry. Fox' approach is purely biological and rational, it requires a certain biological knowledge - particularly anatomical terminology and physiology, and leaves many of the old-fashioned "traditional" ways of doing things behind. Especially the chapter 'Development and Behaviour' is without comparison the best I have seen on the topic in any book on raptors or falconry. I have changed my own way of thinking completely after reading 'Understanding the Bird of Prey'. This is the future of falconry.   Jakob E. Borch

'The novice is taken through all the stages in the training of his first bird, but the experienced falconer will still find a vast store of information on every imaginable aspect of his sport...'      Shooting Times Monthly Magazine

'The best new book on the art of falconry to have appeared in many years. Mr Glasier covers every aspect of the practice of hawking with accuracy, detail and lucidity...'       IBIS, Journal of the British Ornithologists' Union

This is the first book on falconry I got and I still consider it the best allround book on traditional falconry. Mr Glasier answer in detail all the questions You might have as new to the sport. Experienced falconers too will gain from the enormous knowledge compiled in this book. The chapters are all spiced with relevant anecdotes illustrating the subjects in a livelier form. The book contains instructions on making Your own furniture and several patterns for hoods, glove and hawkingbag. If You only want one manual, this could be the one.       Jakob E. Borch

Desert hawking... with a little help from my friends
Publ.: McElroy
Year and place: 1996 Arizona
ISBN:

****   Hardcover, 430 pp. Many colour and b/w photograps and pen-drawings.

A very complete treatise on american hawks and how to train them. McElroy has a very fine understanding of the hawk-mind, and has a very modern view on the training of hawks. He employs the latest knowledge of animal behaviour in this his third book. The book not only teaches you the principles of training but also contains a plethora of examples to illustrate the points. McElroy is a dedicated austringer, and probably the person that knows most about Cooper's hawks in North America - or anywhere else.
"...with a little help from my friends" refers to the chapters written by some of North Americas finest falconers: Tom and Jennifer Coulson, Dr. Kenneth Tuttle, Oscar Biengolea, Mario DiDominico, Adam Norrie, and Eric Tabb. Those are chapters on the bi-colored hawk, the sharp-shinned hawk, the Harris' hawk, the american kestrel, the passage merlin, the aplomado falcon, the passage prairie, and on hood-making.      Jakob Borch

"This is a marvellous book, a real gem. It deserves a primary place in every falconer's (and hawk enthusiast's) library. Run, don't walk, to your desk and order it immediately!... you'll find yourself referring to it over and over again throughout your hawking career..."      David T. Moran, Hawk Chalk, vol. 36, april

****     Hard cover. 232 pp. b/w photos and illustrations. Covers most suitable birds, their care, preventive medicine, rehabilitation of injured birds of prey, captive breeding, english falconry laws, and vital aspects of conservation.

The species accounts are rather short, as is the chapters on training. The chapters on building mews for use in larger establishments, breeding, and care of sick or injured raptors, on the other hand, are very good and comprehensive. Recommended reading for these purposes, though I personally would have liked some more illustrations throughout the book.      Jakob E. Borch

****     Hard cover. 160 pp. Numerous photographs from The National Birds of Prey Center in England. Guide to the training of the five different kinds of hawks: hawks, falcons, eagles, buteos, and owls. Discusses the merits of keeping and flying the different hawks. Particular attention is given to owls.

This is a good choice as a first book on falconry. All the basic stuff is covered nicely, and Mrs Parry-Jones' background as a 'public educator' comes through in her thorough explanations. She very obviously knows what the beginner find hard to understand and do, and she does a very nice job guiding him through his problems. The approach is very modern, but the composition of the book quite traditional. As the only falconry book I know of, it gives advice on the keeping and training of owls.   Jakob E. Borch

'Excellent insight combined with completely contemporary and rational approach, entirely on falcons.'       F. L. Beebe, 'The Compleat Falconer'

This is a very good treatise on the practice of falconry. Stevens have some very intelligent considerations on particularly mews, hacking, It would have served the books well with illustrations to illustrate the points. It is easy to read and will serve the beginner well as a supplement to a more comprehensive and illustrated manual. Highly recommendable reading for experienced falconers too.      Jakob E. Borch

In the chapters on furniture Upton advise the beginner as well as the more experienced, how to make furniture and in particular why to make it in the advised way. Being entirely on longwings, the chapters on training and hunting should be obligatory reading to all aspiring longwing falconers. Upton give valuable advise not only on how to position your hawk, your dog and yourself, but also why you should do it the way described. In a few schematic drawings he pins out his points on positioning and entering. The book also contains the most extensive collection of patterns I've seen in any book. More than 50 pages with hood-patterns and patterns for gloves, bag, jesses and perches. This is one of the finest manuals I have read.       Jakob E. Borch
