Read: Exodus 6:6-8
1.THE PROMISE OF SEPARATION
"I WILL BRING YOU OUT" V6
In the Bible Egypt is always portrayed as a place of darkness and bondage. It speaks about the world in which we live before we become Christians and enter that relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
God in His mercy promises to separate His people from the world. He is the One with the power to bring us out. We cannot deliver ourselves. If we could, there would be no need for a Saviour.
As a people who have been separated, we are meant to live lives that show we are different from those around us. This is why the apostle Peter says : "You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9). Every statement in Peter’s words shows that we are a distinct people, we stand out from the crowd. We follow the Lord and not the world.
2. THE PROMISE OF FREEDOM
"I WILL RESCUE YOU FROM THEIR BONDAGE" V6
As He brings us out He also frees us from the bondage of our sin and darkness.
Charles Wesley in his great hymn states it so nicely:
"Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and natures night
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light
My chains fell off, my heart was free
I rose, went forth and followed Thee."
What joy there is when a soul has been freed from the bondage and burden of sin! Jesus reminds us that "If the Son shall set you free, you shall be free indeed" (John 8:32). A mighty freedom! From darkness to light, from sin to salvation, from Satan to God! He has indeed rescued us, praise His name!
3. THE PROMISE OF REDEMPTION
"I WILL REDEEM YOU WITH AN OUTSTRETCHED ARM" V6
All of these great promises of God contained in these verses are linked together as if to demonstrate one great truth: God saves sinners. Yet individually they show us just how big and grand the salvation of God is and how deep and wide is His grace.
The promise of redemption is a wonderful one to contemplate for it takes us right the way back to a place called Calvary where the Son of God purchased our salvation by dying upon the cross. He did so not with silver of gold but with His own precious blood (1 Peter 1:18-19).
The "outstretched arm" can be likened to Christ upon the cross, His arms wide open and nailed to it. That act of redeeming love opened the way for us to enter into the joy of God’s great salvation.
4. THE PROMISE OF SELECTION
"I WILL TAKE YOU AS MY PEOPLE" V7
This is incredible! We, who had been rebels against Him and His holy law, who had sought to go our own way rather than His, He has promised to take us as His people! Can we begin to fathom the depths of God’s electing and selecting love? Read Romans 3:10-18 and ask yourself if you are deserving of such love. You will conclude that not a single one of us deserves His mercy. He would have been perfectly just if He had cast us aside forever. The wonder of the gospel is not that men and women are lost, it is that any are saved at all! It is all "according to His mercy" (Titus 3:5) that He has saved us.
5.THE PROMISE OF BELONGING
"I WILL BE YOUR GOD" V7
As God’s separated, free, redeemed, selected people, we now live in the sweet knowledge that He is our God. We belong to Him and He belongs to us. "My beloved is mine, and I am His" (Song of Solomon 2:16). We are in a relationship with Him and we can glorify Him and enjoy Him forever. Because of this relationship we now have with Him we can draw upon the vast treasures of His mercy that He has promise to grant us to our eternal blessing.
Unlike the gods we once served (Ps115:4-8), He is alive. He speaks to us. He hears our prayers. He sees our situation. He touches us with His tender hand. He walks with us daily as we walk with Him. We can love Him and serve Him and give Him all that He is due as we worship Him from our hearts. He is our God. He is for us and never against us.
6.THE PROMISE OF ADMISSION
"I WILL BRING YOU INTO" V8
Not only does He bring us out but He brings us in. He brings us into an amazing life where we can know daily His peace, His power, His provision, His presence and His promises.
We are brought into a Promised Land where God dwells and when we pass out of this world in death we shall enter the land He has prepared for us for eternity.
7.THE PROMISE OF POSSESSION
"I WILL GIVE IT TO YOU AS A HERITAGE" V8
We have already mentioned heaven and that great promised land we shall enjoy for eternity. It is God’s inheritance for us. We live in the present with our eye upon the ultimate prize - "an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away" (1 Peter 1:4).
As if to add more to the wonder of this inheritance, Peter tells us that this is "reserved in heaven for you". Yes, for YOU! Brother, Sister, young and old, rich and poor, weak and strong - FOR YOU!
We have much to rejoice in as we consider these "exceedingly great and precious promises" (2 Peter 1:4). Think about this - these are only seven of the many hundreds, even thousands of promises that are our in Christ Jesus!
