Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon Manga

Once in a lifetime, a story comes along. One so captivating that it acquires it's own animated series, in numerous languages, musicals, CD's, computer software, clothing, lunchpails, videos. . .you get the point. This story happens to be one of few: Naoko Takeuchi's Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon. Few people realize the amount of work that went into the making of Sailormoon. Naoko based Sailormoon on many aspects of of mythology and legend. Aside from the hours of careful, painstaking research, and the tedious task of drawing the breathtaking artwork that makes Sailormoon come alive, Naoko had to come up with a way to make the story appealing. Light, simple humour is one of the things that makes Sailormoon so enjoyable to read. The character, Usagi, is the world's clumsiest and naive teenager; she is constantly in the center of many jokes poking at her personality and behaviour.

Above all, Sailormoon is a romance story. Naoko created her characters with a unique personality all their own. Each character has a range of feelings and emotions that make them unique, and in most cases, likeable. The deep romance between the main characters, Usagi/Sailormoon and Mamoru/Tuxedo Kamen is a story in itself. Besides the main characters, there are also other romantic relationships, such as the "kitty love" between Luna and Artemis, or the controversial relationship between Haruka and Michiru.

Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon was originally published in the monthly shojo magazine, Nakayoshi, and then was compiled into 18 volumes by Kondansha. Each book contains up to 4 acts, of 52, as well as many short-stories that were usaually featured in Run-Run, a sister publication to Nakayoshi. The manga has also been translated into numerous languages, such as: Cantonese, Italian, French and recently, English. The story ended in March 1997, with the wedding of Usagi and Mamoru.

With the marriage of Usagi and Mamoru, it silently states that there is little chance that there will be anymore Sailormoon manga, despite the fact that Naoko didn't want to end it. However, those of you who want to keep on dreaming, go right ahead. . .there's always fan fiction! Just don't get your hopes up to high.
