Winged Horses, Beautiful Dreams ... And One Big Nightmare!
Sailor Moon Super
Six. Possibly the best of the five series ... Sailor Moon
SS has it all ... new love, and old, stories from the
past, and visions of the future. Dreams and nightmares.
Good versus evil. Sounds like the same old same old, ne??
What makes SMSS so captivating? So intriguing? So amusing? So irresistibly -- romantic?? SMSS is very well researched, mythically. Aside from it's tightly bound storyline, new characters (and the best soundtrack this side of the moon) it's that special Takeuchi-touch that makes this one of the most enjoyable series. What starts out as an exciting once-in-a-lifetime event in Tokyo - the day of a solar eclipse - ends out to be the beginning of a nightmare. It was to be Chibiusa's last day in present-day Tokyo; she'd soon be returning to Crystal Tokyo; her training was over. Or so they thought. During the eclipse. Usagi and Chibiusa are approached by a winged horse with a long golden horn protruding from his forehead. He speaks of a Maiden ... he desperately needs the Golden Crystal to save his world ... Only moments after, Usagi and the gang witness the coming of their new enemies, The Dead Moon Circus, lead by the evil Jirconia. In truth, it was not Jirconia who was the leader of the Dead Moon Circus, but, rather, it was the malicious Queen Nephrenia. She had returned to claim the world as her own. Long ago, Nephrenia had inhabited the moon during the event of an eclipse. She was bitterly jealous of Queen Serenity and even more so of her newborn daughter, Princess Serenity (Sailor Moon). She made a "guest" appearance at the celebration of the birth of the successor to the throne ... and bared a gift to the lovely Princess: A curse. The Princess would die before inheriting the throne. When this curse was fulfilled, the Silver Millennium would be destroyed. Not only does the past become clearer for our beloved Princess, it also does for Prince Endymion too ... Poor Mamoru had been plagued with a mysterious sickness throughout the series. Unexplainable fatigue and weakness, coughing up black blood ... And somehow, Usagi ends up with the same symptoms ... Pegasus tells them it is part of the curse. He reveals himself as the Priest of Elysion, Elios. Elysion, he explains, is the Holy land that protects the Earth. "It quietly rests deep in the Earth, a place like the heart of this planet. My mission is to continue watching over Elysion, and Earth, as well as you, Prince Endymion." Elios continues, "The two of you (Serenity and Endymion) shared the same mission, the same power and the same soul. You protected this planet, Earth. The Silver Millennium from without, and the Golden Kingdom from within." Mamoru's past becomes clearer -- he is a descendant from a Kingdom known as the Golden Kingdom, and possesses within himself the power of the Golden Crystal. Elios' alter form as the Pegasus is the result of Nephrenia's curse. He tells the Prince and Princess that they must unleash the power of their dreams in order to defeat Nephrenia. They must believe in their hearts. Sailormoon stood alone against Nephrenia ... she combined her power with the power of the Senshi and Tuxedo Kamen to become the legendary Eternal Sailormoon ... and this rest is history. It's rather pointless for me to ramble on the battle; the outcome is obvious ^.^ Usagi realized an important fact; " Power isn't born alone. You cannot use it alone." Not only does this series have a strong action-packed plot, it also has a very romantic side. Chibiusa is on the road to achieving her dream - becoming a lady - she meets her first real love - Elios. The Maiden that Elios spoke of was Princess Lady Serenity - the future self of Chibiusa, and the future wife of Elios. He reveals to Chibiusa that she is the beholder of the "Pink Moon Crystal". A crystal that is kin to the Ginzuisho (Silver Crystal). One of the most important events in this series is the "coronation" of the King and Queen of the Silver Millennium - King Endymion and Neo-Queen Serenity. Four new Senshi are also revealed: Sailor Juno, Sailor Pallas, Sailor Vesta and Sailor Ceres. They were formerly known as the Amazoness Quartet; sworn enemies of the Sailor Senshi. Sailor Ceres explains their existence "In truth, we were still in the middle of our sleep, deep in the Amazon. We were forced to awake by the curse. In a nightmare, we were made to perform as servants of the Dead Moon ... We will enter our sleep again, for our true awakening is still ahead. From our hearts, we are awaiting the time when, someday, you will stand on your own as a soldier, Chibimoon. That is the time of our true awakening. If you need us, we will give our lives to protect you..." The Asteroid Senshi, as the are known, are the four guardian soldiers of Chibiusa, much the same way as the Inner Senshi guard Usagi. Naoko Takeuchi does an amazing job in telling the continuing story of Sailormoon (of course! That's her profession!!) as well as the importance of trusting your heart, rather than your desires. You can never have too many dreams, but you only have one true destiny ... |
