1926-1962
Norma Jeane Baker was born on July 2, 1926 to Gladys Baker Mortensen. Gladys was working in a film cutting laboratory before Norma Jeane was born. Gladys spent most of her time in the asylum, or as a film cutter making money to help support her daughter who was living in foster homes for most of her young life. When Norma Jeane turned 16, she married Jim Doughrty in June 1942. Jim was soon shipped off to fight in WWII, and Norma Jeane went to work in an aircraft-parts factory. Finding her job delightful, she soon recieved a certificate for 'exellence on the job.' Daivd Conover, taking pictures of women working in the factory for Yank magazine, arranged many sessions with the young Marilyn. Soon she was working for Blue Book Modeling Studio and Agency. When Jim came back form the war, they divorced in 1946. Norma lightened her hair for the Blue Book Agency, and continued to model. It was not until July 1946 when Norma signed a short contract with an option to renew, with Twentieth Century-Fox. She changed her name to Marilyn Monroe and appered in The Shocking Miss Pilgrim, released in 1947.
