Dieser fröhliche Papa und seine Kinder – eine keltische Legende
Eine Irische Gruppe begeistert die ganze Welt

Mit den Kellys lebt die irische Folklore weiter. Rings um den Papa, einen kernigen, jovialen Vollbartträger, gibt es neun Kinder jeden Alters. Sie singen, sie tanzen, sie spielen alle möglichen Instrumente. Sie reisen durch die ganze Welt. Überall applaudiert man. Und besser noch, sie sind glücklich!
Wenn man über sie schreiben will, geraten einem die Formulierungen derart durcheinander, dass man sich schiesslich fragt: Gibt es sie wirklich?
Man hat ein paar Tage mit ihnen verbracht, hat sie gesehen, die neun Kinder der Familie Kelly, wie sie am Morgen aufstehen in einem kleinen bretonischen Haus (das unter einem echt bretonischen Dach fast erstickt), wie sie einer nach dem anderen ihren Löffel Lebenrtran schlucken, ihr Glas Tomatensaft mit Bierhefe und ihre Rühreier. Wenn dann der letzte der Prozession aus dem Badezimmer herauskommt, wen nsie alle da sind, mit ihren weit schwierigenden Röcken, ihren bauschigen Hosen, dass man nicht weiss, welcher Bauern-Folklore des 17. Jahrhunderts sie entsprangen, wenn sie sich gegenseitig die langen blonden Haare kämmen, wie einst Hänsel und Gretel (auf den ersten Blick fragt man sich, sind es Burschen oder Mädchen?), dann scheint die Zeit zu verschwimmen und man glaubt, mitten hinein in eine keltische Legende gesprungen zu sein. Und auch Dan, der Papa, passt in diese Legende. Mit seinem langen Silberhaar, dem das Gesicht wie ein Fächer rahmenden Bart, seiner kolossalen Taille und dem schönen blauen Blick, entspricht er exakt der Vorstellung von lieben Gott, die man sich als Vierjährige machte.
Auch ihr Leben erscheint unwirklich. Es erinnert an Fantasien, wie sie Kinder spinnen, wenn sie im Kreis zusammenhocken und Traumwelt spielen; wenn, sie sich ein ideales Szenario und die grossen Linien vorgeben, bevor sie die Rollen verteilen: “Wir wollen nie arbeiten, wir wollen singen und tanzen und alle Instrumente spielen. Alle sollen Beifall klatschen. Wir wollen durch die ganze Welt reisen. Wir wollen überall zu Hause sein. Wir wollen nie zu Schule gehen, aber viele Sprachen sprechen.”
Auf Reisen sind sie nun seit vielen Jahren, seit sie den Schüssel in der Tür ihres Hauses in den USA herumdrenten und singend Europa durchstreifen. Zu zehnt: Der Vater Dan Kelly plus fünf Söhnen (Johnny, Jimmy, Joey, Paddy, Angelo) und vier Töchern (kathy, Patricia, Barby und Maite). Auch die drei Erstgeborenen in den USA muss man hinzuzählen, und vor allem Barbara, ihre Mutter, deren Reise zu Ende ging und die jetzt auf einem kleinen Friedhof im Baskenland ruht.
Die ganze Familie ist stolz auf ihre irische herkunft. Irisch sind sie väterlicherseits (wenn der Vater auch in Massachusetts geboren wurde), mütterlicherseits ausserdem österreichisch-finnischer Herkunft (wenn die Mutter auch als Kind sogenannter “Pennsylvania Dutch” zur Welt kam) und schliesslich amerikanische Staatsbürger. Dan Kelly hatte schon vier Kinder als er merkte, dass das Frernsehen des “American way of life” ihr Leben zu überwuchern begann. “Ich wuchs in einer Familie auf, in der die Tradition zu singen noch lebendig war”, sagt Dan Kelly, “meine Frau was Tänzerin, doch nun sangen und tanzen wir nicht mehr.” Die Familie löste sich sofort von Bildschirm und führte eigene Shows auf. Aber etwas fehlte… “Auf nach Europa”, beschloss Dan, der sich in den alten Kontinent verliebt hatte, asl er in Rom Philosophie studierte. 1967 liessen sie sich in einem kleinen südspanischen Dorf nieder. Acht Jahre ungebundenes Boheme-Leben folgten, voller Singen und Händeklatschen, mit spanischen Nachbarn und auf die Suche begaben. “Nach Norben, ins Baskenland, wo die Traditionen noch lebendig waren”, erklärt der Vater. Sie liessen sich in einem grossen Haus nahe Pamplona nieder und – von dort aus- begannen sie zu reisen. Ein Akkordeon, eine Geige, Tambourine, eine grosse Trommel… Sie spielten auf der Piazza Navona, in Rom, in Venedig, in Wien. Deutschland bereitete ihnen eine triumphale Aufnamen. Mad lud sie ein, Konzerte zu geben und sie begeisterten ihre Zuhörer, einmal waren es sogar 5000. Das machten sie einmal, aber sie wiederholten es nicht. “Es gibt den Kindern nichts”, sagt Dan Kelly, “es gibt keinen menschlichen Kontakt mehr, es wird Star-Rummel, ich will das nicht für sie.”
Zurück auf die Strasse, in die Metro, die gleiche Pariser Metro, in die Frankreichs Schallplattenkönig Eddie Barclay (der seit zwanzig Jahren keinen Fuss mehr in die Metro gesetzt hatte) hinabstieg, um sie auf einen Tip hin kennenzulernen. Ein Abstieg, dem wir eine Schallplatte und ein franzäsisches Chanson verdanken und der die Kelly Family zu den einziegen geladenen Gästen machte, die ohne weisse Kleidung zur Hochzeit Eddie Barclays kommen durften.
Sie singen in Burgen und Dörfern. Nack dem “Konzert” wird eine “Feier” organisiert, ein Essen und danach Tanz, wo es nicht mehr Stars noch Publikum gibt, sondern eine fröhlich tanzende und singende Gemeinschaft. Die einen verständigen sich englisch, die anderen deutsch, französisch, spanisch und “natürlich” baskisch. Der Vater ist sicher, dass dies alles gut für sie ist. “Die Kinder glauben an mich. Ich will sie glücklich sehen und sie verstehen das.” Wie wird es verstanden? Der Frage: “Habt ihr Angst vor eurem Vater?” anwortet allgemeines Lachen: “Er hat Angst vor uns!” Dennoch marschiert die Familie in Reih und Glied. Ein Vorteil grosser Familien: Die Kleinen scheinen sich selbst zu erziehen. Sehr wenig Zähneknirschen oder Maulen. Vor dem Foto-Objektiv ist man professionell; den Rest der Zeit herrscht fröliche Disziplin. “Weil sie an das glauben, was sie tun, sagt der Vater. Sie lieben es und das ist sie beste Voraussetzung, glücklich zu sein.”
Es wird immer wieder Tourneen geben: Amerika, sicher auch Japan, das ist schon Tradition. Sie werden dort nicht immer bleiben. Vor fünf Jahren haben sie singend ihre Mutter auf den kleinen Friedhof im Baskenland geleitet, auf dem sie nun ruht. Sie hatte die Kinder langsam darauf vorbereitet, ohne sie weiterzumachen. Und sie hat von ihnen verlangt: “Keep on singing”! Damit die Legenden noch leben…

“Keep on Singing” – seit über zwanzig Jahren trägt die KELLY FAMILY eine musikalische Lebensphilosophie durch die Welt, die ihresgleichen sucht. Allen musikalischen Trends zum Trotz haben Vater Dan Kelly und seine neun Kinder ein Liedgut bewahrt, das aus den Wurzeln irischer Folklore gewaschsen ist und durch sie zum Singspiel unvergleichlicher Lebensfreude gedieh.
Erst streiften Vater und Mutter Kelly in den sechziger Jahren von der irisxhen Heimat aus allein singend kreuz und quer durch Europa, ehe sie sich 1967 in Südspanien ansiedelten. Mit den Kindern kam eine neue musikalische Dimension: Man sang mit den spanischen Nachbarn, lernte deren Lieder, tanzte ihre Folklore, und die Kinder lernten verschiedene Instrumente. Acht Jahre lang führte die KELLY FAMILY ein so herrlich ungebundenes Boheme-Leben, das irgendwann auch die Medien aufmerksam wurden.
Dann der grausame Schicksalsschlag: Mutter Barbara Kelly musste die wunderbare musikalische Reise wegen einer schweren Krankheit beenden, und Vate Dan und die neun Kinder trugen sie bald darauf auf einem kleinen Friedhof im Baskenland zu Grabe. Für die Öffentlichkeit was es das Ende der populären KELLY FAMILY, nicht aber für Vater Dan und die Kinder. Man zog sich zwar zurück aus der Öffentlichkeit, aber nach der Zeit der Trauer wurde im kleinen Kreis wieder gesungen, irgendwann auch wieder getanzt. Dan Kelly: “Barbaras Wunsch war es immer, auch ohne sie weiterzumachen. Die Legenden sollten leben…”
Das Vermächtnis der Mutter, die den neun Kindern so viel Musik und so unbeschwerte Lebensfreunde mitgegeben hatte, liess die KELLY FAMILY wieder an alte Traditionen anknüpfen: 1987 begannen sie wieder zu reisen – durch Italien, Spanien, Frankreich, sogar Amerika. Wo immer sie auftraten, öffneten sie die Herzen der Menschen und ernteten für ihre Musik und ihre Auftritte wahre Beifallsstürme.
Mit diesem Album, reisen sie nun auch wieder durch Ceutschland. “Keep On Singing” – die KELLY FAMILY und ihr Leben in Liedern.
