Radio News and Things:
WRKC 'BLUES' VACATION: We are taking a break from the radio until May...see you then at our regular time slot.(3/5/05) This vacation has lasted a while. Thanks for waiting! (7/20/09) I have noticed that quite a few listeners have missed one or two 'hours of power'. I have cassette copies of each one, listed on the 'hour long review' page. Let me know if you need some dubs of these shows! See ya next week. Articles will be appearing in the links column from time to time, as well. If you would like to submit your own work, email it.
Some interesting albums to check out:
1 Taj Mahal: Hannapepe Dream – While 1998’s ‘Sacred Island’ was overtly Hawaiian, this album is Polynesian in origin, reflecting Taj’s roots. This album is enjoyable and has it’s moments (notably the title track, Stagger Lee and Watchtower) but it may be too 'world' for some blues fans. Many would say less band, more Taj. HEADLINED POCONO BLUES FESTIVAL 2003.
2 BB King: Reflections – Another winner from the king of the blues. Focus is on R and B and Pop tunes this time around, abandoning King’s road band for studio pros. This gives him more leeway to do his thing, which is sing and play like the genius he is.
3 Buddy Guy: Blues Singer – Essential. Harkening back to his days backing Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon on the Folk Singer album, Buddy uses spare arrangement to bring some of the best blues of the last ten years. Although a departure for the electric master, it is nice to hear him turn down the volume and turn up the emotion on heart wrenching tunes of heartache and redemption. HEADLINED POCONO BLUES FEST 2003.
4 Peter Green: Reaching the Cold 100 – Since his comeback in the mid 1990’s, Peter Green has been getting better and more controlled with each release. This album finds him coming full circle from the live ‘Splinter Group’ LP to effectively combine original material and classic Fleetwood Mac tunes. Not quite his 60’s material, but after twenty five years of obscurity and illness, it is pretty good. Enjoyable for novices and long time fans.
5 Fleetwood Mac: Say You Will - Lindsey Buckingham reclaims the Fleetwood Mac legacy for his own and turns in this studio masterwork. Songs like 'Come', 'Murrow' and 'Peacekeeper' make this album one of 2003's essential discs. Pick up the special edition of this to hear live versions of several key tracks. Blues based rock at it's best. Tour came to Phili 9/26.
6 Mark Knopfler: The Ragpicker's Dream. The newest solo work from Dire Straits frontman Knopfler. This work is very much influenced by bluegrass, as opposed to his last effort, 'Sailing to Philadelphia', which was influenced by delta blues. The standout track is 'Devil Baby'. A definite classic!
7 Soloman Burke: Don't Give Up on Me. A soul classic from veteran Burke. This album features songs by Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Brian Wilson and other luminaries, accenting Burke's amazing voice with songs of loss and love. The most moving soul album since Stax closed it's doors! Grammy winner 2003.
New as of 4/5: Aerosmith, Keb Mo
