Internal Combat Concepts: The system
Internal Combat Concepts
The system that I teach, I have dubbed "Internal Combat Concepts". I view this as a continually evolving system. It is founded in the American art of Quan Li K'an as taught to me by Master Bruce Everett Miller. Mr. Miller is one of the modern geniuses in the martial arts as well as being a certified Physician's assistant. His system is based on using the body's physiology and anatomy against itself in a relaxed explosive manner. He believes in the martial arts as combat not sports and has devised his system as such. Mr. Miller is a pressure point specialist whose system is forms based.
ICC is also founded in the art of Taijiquan as taught by Master Erle Montaigue (I refer to him as master out of respect and acknowledge that he formally dislikes the title). I also incorporate much of Mr. Montaigue's teaching on Bagwazhang.
ICC also takes elements from the Dillman method of pressure points and the art of Okinawan Kempo as taught to me by Sensei Jack and Sensei Beverly Gustafson from St. Cloud Karate Instruction. Both of these great teachers have vast experience in many different arts and were gracious enough to pass much of this teaching on to me.
Some of the concepts that ICC incorporates from these many varied sources as well as my own personal research are: Looseness, creativity, Independent thought, Explosiveness, Deadliness, Rootedness, Connectedness, Emotional content, physiology linked to the limbic systme, mind of the animal, awareness, sensitivity, kinestetic/emotional mapping, stillness in movement/movement in stillness, no set rules beyond those of natural movement based on physiology, physics and enery.
I use forms from Quan Li K'an, Taijiquan and Bagwazhang, and Okinawan Kempo to teach combat mapping. I use Taijiquan and Bagwazhang two person drills to apply combat concepts. ICC attempts to encompass as much realism as possible.
ICC is highly structured art that is continually developing and evolving but really has no structure and thus can be easily individualized to the needs of each student.
