The third time's a charm. "Scream 3" is nearly on par with the first and far better than the dull second installment. Screenwriter Ehren Kruger picks up where Kevin Williamson's concept left off, and his script is even sharper. This time out, Campbell is living as a recluse, and Hollywood is making another film about her when the cast starts getting offed by the blade-wielding psycho. Appearances by McCarthy, Posey, Carrie Fisher and even Kevin Smith as his inevitable Silent Bob character are good. Oh, please, Kevin, reconsider and give us a Scream 4!

Sadly, it's almost over. But at least Wes Craven and his crew saved the best for last.

Of course we mean "Scream 3" (Miramax), the final chapter in the series of films that set out to reverently spoof teen-slasher flicks.

This time around, perpetual victim Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has graduated from college and moved to Hollywood, where she's working on "Stab 3," the movie within "Scream 3," based on her life.

But just when Sidney thinks she's safe, members of the "Stab" crew become victims of yet another crazed killer looking to imitate the real-life murders that Sidney and some of her pals--namely Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox Arquette)--have survived.

But wait! Is it an impostor or a returning psycho who wasn't really killed after all? That's the real question that sets up a series of twists, the series' trademark humor, a couple of great cameos (Jay and Silent Bob?!?!) and, in the end, a deliciously surprising turn that ties everything up very nicely.

Well, as nice as a story about a knife-wielding freak can be.
