There are 1.2 million Firefighters in over 30,000 Fire Departments nationwide. Each year, nearly 100 Firefighters lose their lives in the line of duty and almost 100,000 are injured. In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the official National Monument site on the campus of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The monument itself was constructed in 1981. An annual memorial service is held to honor those who gave their lives the previous year. In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Fire Fighter's Foundation,  which is also on the National Fire Academy campus.
A memorial has been constructed at Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs. A trail on the mountain, tracing the route the Fire Fighter's took, is also maintained. Cement crosses mark the spots where those who died were found.
