On May 20 and 21, at Hanoi Opera House, Vietnam's Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) performs a concert named "Works by Beethoven" under the baton of an English conductor, Graham Sutcliffe. The program includes Fidelio Overture Op72B, Piano Concerto No1 Op19 and Symphony No3 Eroica Op55. Soloist is Daniel Vainal, professor at the London Royal Academy.

The Vietnam Symphony Orchestra, in co-ordination with the Hanoi Conservatory, gives a special concert with many famous works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn at the Hanoi Opera House on Feb. 19 & 20, 2001.
Artist Hoang Linh, born in 1959, lecturer of the Hanoi Conservatory, is expected to play violin solo at the concert. He is a promising violinist. He was a student of professors Hoang Cuong and Bich Ngoc and followed a post-graduate course at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
The concert will be under the baton of famous Japanese conductor Tetsuji Honna. This is the first time he has performed with the Vietnam Symphony Orchestra.
Mr Honna, born in 1957, studied at Tokyo Fine Arts and Music College. He used to conduct the Osaka Symphony Orchestra and Japan Chamber Music Orchestra.
Mr Honna has won many international awards, including the Luthasan prize in Tokyo in 1985; the second prize in Parma (Italy, 1990) and the first prize in Budapest (Hungary, 1992.) In addition, he won the Nippon Steel award for young musical talents in 1995.
Honna has conducted many well-known orchestras such as the national symphony orchestras of Hungary, Slovenia and the Netherlands. He has been conducting the Nagoya Symphony Orchestra, one of the leading orchestras in Japan, since 1997.

The famous cellist, Professor Bui Gia Tuong, gave a solo concert on April 4 at the Hanoi Conservatoire with Dr Tran Thu Ha (piano), Dr Ngo Van Thanh (violin) and Ha Ngoc Thoa (MA) (piano). He performed works by Joseph Haydn, Frescobaldi, Weber, Beethoven, Mendelsohn and Nguyen Dinh Phuc. The professor hopes to give another concert with the Vietnam Symphony
Orchestra, a recital with works by Schumann and
Nguyen Dinh Phuc, when he is 65 years old.

The Vietnam Movie Association and the French Embassy
in Vietnam are holding French film days in Hanoi from
April 5-9. ?Diva? (1980), ?Step in the Dark? (1984)
and ?Worry? (1986) will be shown at 51 Tran Hung Dao
street, Hanoi.

The five Australian member music ensemble, Ensemble 24 performs at the Hanoi Opera House on April 8. They play works by Luigi Boccherini (Italy), Hugo Wolf (Austria), Manuel de Falla (Spain) in a young and beautiful way. Ensemble 24 was founded in 1996 by Peter Morisson to perform less known musical works. The ensemble includes 24 members who are leading musicians in Australia. |

The famous Spanish guitarist, G Henrique, will perform in Hanoi on April 11 with classical and modern musical works. The Spanish guitarist started teaching master classes at Hanoi Conservatoire on April 3. This is the second time he has visited and performed in Vietnam. The first time was in 1999. |

The Toulouse national chamber orchestra gave a
performance under the baton of conductor Alain Moglia
in Hanoi on April 12. They played 'Overture in C minor' by Schubert, 'Concerto for violin in D minor' by Mendelssohn, 'Serenade for stringed instruments' by Lesur and 'Serenade' by Tchaikovski. The orchestra is giving a performance in Haiphong on April 13. The performances are organised under the sponsorship of Alliance Française.

The British band Ferhhill will perform in Hanoi,
Sa Pa and Ho Chi Minh City from June 13-26 in the
framework of cultural exchange between Vietnam and
Britain in 2000.

The 87-member Vietnam Symphony Orchestra will give its fifth performance on April 21 and 22 under the baton of professor Colin Metters from the London Royal Music Conservatoire under the sponsorship of the British Council. The programme will begin with a work by A. Sullivan and end with the second Symphony in D Major op 43 by J. Sibelius. Two works by Do Nhuan will also be played in the programme with the participation of People?s Artist Le Dung. Co-ordinators of the programme come from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Conservatoires and Ho Chi Minh City's Orchestra.

A Swiss jazz troupe will give performances in Vietnam
from April 24-30 under the organisation of the Hanoi
Conservatoire.

The Dai Nam Centre for Cultural Service, in
co-ordination with Vietnam UNZA Company, will hold a
Vietnamese beauty contest at the Hanoi Friendship
Cultural Palace from April 29 to May 1 to mark the
25th anniversary of the liberation of the south and
national reunification day. After competing in Hanoi,
award winners will give performances in Ho Chi Minh
City. The contest aims to honour the traditional
beauty of Vietnamese women and at the same time to
help the young broaden their knowledge and learn from
each other to have a healthy life, a national
consciousness and a suitable life style in a
Vietnamese culture, rich in national identity. The
organising board will spend part of proceeds on
restoring Hanoi's traditional cultural heritage and
on the fund for war victims in Ho Chi Minh City.

A Beethoven Musical Night will be jointly held in Hanoi
Opera House on May 9 to mark ?European Day? (May 9)
by the International Relations Department of the
Ministry of Culture and Information and the European
Commission. Hanoi conservatoire?s symphony orchestra
and chorus will perform the ?Symphony No 9? by the
great composer, which already made its debut to
Hanoi?s audiences in early March. The performance will
be conducted by the French conductor, Xavier Rist.

Harry Robert Ryker, a famous conductor and musical critic in the world, conducts the Hanoi Conservatory?s Symphony Orchestra to perform works of Beethoven, Shostakovic's 10th Symphony and others. Participating in the performance will be Professor-Doctor Tran Thu Ha (pianist), Professor-Doctor Ngo Van Thanh (violinist) and cellist Ngo Hoang Quan. The concert be held at Hanoi Conservatory on May 25 and Hanoi Opera House on May 27

Professors Klaus Becker (oboe) and Philippe Boucly,
(flute), members of the German Linos orchestra, give
two concerts at the Sofitel Metropole Hanoi Hotel on
June 2 and 3, 2000. The professors have given lectures at
the Hanoi Conservatoire since early June.

The Italian Cameristi Triestini Chamber Orchestra gave
a performance at the Hanoi Opera House on June 6. The
orchestra included 16 instrumentalists under the baton
of Fabio Nossal, founder of the orchestra.
The orchestra played works by Vivaldi, Baldassarre, Geminiani,
Marcello, Kalman, Razato, Bennatzky and Lehar.
Cameristi Triestini regularly performs musical works belonging to
the romantic period, with a soloist or chorus. A recording of the
performance will be issued on three CDs.
The orchestra has given performances in Austria, Slovakia, the
Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, France, Hungary, Spain,
Luxembourg, the United States, Croatia and Argentina.

The Scott Tinkler Trio, reckoned as the most exciting
Australian Jazz group, will give a performance in Hanoi
Opera House on June 10, 2000. Before the event, the
group makes an appearance with its own programme at
the Jazz Club at 31 Luong Van Can street, Hanoi. Hanoi
is one of the stop-overs of the group in Asia. During
its stay in Vietnam, the group has an exchange with
students of Hanoi Conservatory.

Ferhill and Rag Foundation, famous folk music troupes from Wales, will give performances in Vietnam in two weeks (in Sa Pa on June 17, in Hanoi on 20 and 21 and in Ho Chi Minh City on June 24 and 25). The bands include a combination of guitars, flutes, clarinets and a woman singer, Julie Murphy. The five artists will play Welsh folk music and songs that have many things in common with Vietnamese folk music.
Ferhill has performed successfully in Africa, Asia and Europe. Together with Rag Foundation, the artists want to create the chance to exchange and learn about the two traditional music types, Vietnamese and Welsh in particular and between Vietnam and the United Kingdom in general.

The Vietnam Symphony Orchestra will give concerts at the Hanoi Opera House on October 28 and 29.
The programme will be conducted by Professor Colin Metters from the London Royal Conservatory and organised by the Ministry of Culture and Information and the British Council.
The programme will feature ‘Overture to Candide’ by Leonard Bernstein, Piano Concerto No 1 in D minor op 15 by Johannes Brahms and Symphony No 2 in D major op 36 by Ludwig van Beethoven. Piano soloist is a young Vietnamese: Nguyen Bich Tra.
