Bernard Herbert Plassmeyer was classified Missing In
Action from 1970 until 1976, when he was declared dead for lack of evidence to the contrary. It's been 28 years, 2 months, and 12 days since Bernie's plane went down. That means a lot to me. My mother was only 24 years old when America lost Bernie. That was so long ago that I am now 24 years old. Bernie has been lost to us longer than I've been alive. That's too long. The world is a big place, but not so big that we couldn't have found First Lieutenant Bernard Plassmeyer if we were looking hard enough. Bernie may be dead or he may be a prisoner of war. We don't know. The fact that we don't know is inexcusable. There is no reason, no explanation good enough. This country has the power to find out what happened to Bernie. I'm ashamed and angry and frustrated for Bernie and for his family. He deserves to have his truth told. His family deserves to have their Bernie back - whether it's to love him and make up for 28 years of lost time or whether it's simply to bury the remains of his body in the American soil that he fought so valiantly for. Bernie and his family deserve that much at the very least. I pray for Bernie that he is now in the arms of a loving God who would not abandon him the way that America has. If, for whatever reason and in whatever condition, Bernie is still alive, I pray that he will soon know peace - that however belated, his country will ante up and bring him home.
Someone does love you, Bernard. We want you with us. We just have to find you. I promise you, dear friend, that I will never stop fighting until I convince someone to find you. I will write letters and make phone calls until someone listens to me. I will never give up, and I will never forget what you gave up for me. Please sleep in peace tonight, Bernard, wherever you are. May God fill your heart with the knowledge that someone is looking for you so that you'll no longer be afraid - that you'll no longer feel forgotten. We'll never forget you, Bernie. We miss you.

"Bernie Plassmeyer went missing 16 days before the birth of his only son. His family would like to know where he is, and what happened to him. Like nearly
2500 other Americans, he remains missing in Southeast Asia. Were it not for thousands of reports of Americans still alive in captivity in Southeast Asia, it would be a simple matter to build a memorial and lay
these missing men to rest. But as long as one man, whomever he may be, remains alive and in captivity, every family will wonder. And Bernie Plassmeyer's fate
will remain uncertain."

If you would like to join in the fight to bring our POW/MIA men home to us, please visit my "How To Help" page by clicking on the image below. I have listed the resources I used to adopt Bernard and some ideas for things you can do to heighten awareness in Washington. Let them know that we're tired of taking, "We're doing all we can, ma'am." for an answer. "All they can" is not good enough, and they know it. There IS more that they can do - they just haven't been properly motivated to do more. Let's give them that motivation. Get involved today. Let's bring our guys home. They've already been gone far too long.
